Looking for a great project management online solution? We review three of the top contenders and see where they rank in terms of overall usefulness and capabilities.

Project Management Software Online Suites That Make the Grade

If you have been considering using project management software online, there are a few things that should be addressed before jumping in. First and foremost, it is important to work with a software solution that is not only capable of meeting your project management needs but will also provide you with security and room to grow.

The three best online project management tools stand out from the crowd by supplying project managers with everything they need to keep a team on-task and organized. While some are more suited to smaller companies, all provide a high level of overall usefulness and capabilities.

Basecamp – This is easily the most well known project management software online. Created by the team at 37Signals, this suite integrates with several of the companies tools, including Campfire. This suite is best suited for small to mid sized companies and excels at providing means for team communication and scheduling. The strong points for this service include the ability to upload and share files (with the paid version only) as well as the ability to keep updated on project status through customized RSS feeds. The milestone utility is very useful and provides email updates when deadlines draw near.

The weak points center around the writeboard utility and the fact that many of the functions are a bit simplistic at times. This can be a good thing for team members that are less technical, but may frustrate more advanced users.

Central Desktop – Another strong contender in project management software online. Central Desktop came in a close second, only due to the fact that their collaboration tools are not quite as easy to use as Basecamp. Their strongest feature is the ability to create spreadsheets online, as well as their real time collaboration features.

The main weak point for this service is a lack of user friendliness. Some team members may find the learning curve a bit steep and the UI is not as functional as it could be. This is still a good choice for many companies, but may not be suited for those that are less technical.

24SevenOffice – This project management software online suite is geared more towards managing relations with customers and enterprise level planning. We picked this one simply due to the fact that it does have a great interface for keeping in touch with clients. This is a necessary component for any project management suite, especially when deadlines are drawing near.

This suite scored very strongly when it came to promotion and marketing options, but it could stand some improvement in the overall presentation. Some areas of the application are needlessly complex, while others come up a bit lacking.

Overall, these three could all considered the best online tool for project management since any of these products get the job done. iTeamwork was one that came close to being the best solution, but just failed to make the cut, mainly due to the fact that it has not been updated recently.

At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and the capabilities of the entire team to decide what's the best online tool for you and your team's project management needs.

RE: The 3 Best Online Project Management Utilities
Dooster is meeting our needs.  We were interested in Basecamp initially but didn't take it in the end.  I think it was the pricing.

Dooster.net
I've come into this page looking for something else but would have recommended Dooster.net. I guess all these packages are even better now. Dooster really has been very good for us.

Apollo Project Management
Hi there,

Disclaimer: this is a very biased opinion since I work for Applicom!

Apollo (http://www.apollohq.com) covers both project managements and CRM. In the article you wrote "a great interface for keeping in touch with clients. This is a necessary component for any project management suite, especially when deadlines are drawing near." We agree completely, and that's why Apollo integrates both project management and CRM!

Thanks for listening to my biased opinion :D

Merc.

P.S.
I think I left a comment here before, but I can't see it now!

New Project Management Software
We just started with ProjecTurf (www.projecturf.com) a month ago thanks to Brighthub and we already have our design and marketing departments using it. It's our third software and we are no longer looking. It nicely designed and has an easy to use task manager, let's us track tickets, and works great with clients and keeping information private.

Liquid Planner
Liquid Planner is an online project management software that is unique because it uses a probabilistic scheduling engine which utilizes ranges to predict project completion dates more realistically. My company has been using this and it's worth checking out.

For me the problem has been sorting through all the options out there. There are at least 15 or so big players in the online project management game. Good luck finding a good fit!

@task Project Management Software
You can read Brighthub's review of @task at http://www.brighthub.com/office/project-management/reviews/39370.aspx

I believe @task is a strong leader in the project management space and with the upcoming release of its new social project management platform, I'm sure it will become more popular. You can visit the company site at http://www.attask.com

VisionProject
VisionProject (www.visionproject.se) is a very interesting software as well. I recently did a very large research, testing more than 100 systems, and found that this system was by far the best system for us.
We needed to have something that was not only a waterfall Project Management Software, but also a system that could handle our Agile projects, a system that could help our IT department (ITIL-based processes), a system that could store and share documents (with version management) and also handle our Time Reporting.
Since everyone in the organization was supposed to use the software it needed to be web-based and really easy to use.

Now it is installed and everyone is working with this software as the main organizer for their work. We are really satisfied and happy that we spent so much time searching.
Of course this is not the best system for everyone, but it wasn't easy to find so I just wanted to give you a recommendation for something that we found good.

Project Management Solution
I came across this list - one of many talking about the best project management solutions available. I actually believe that the best solution available is the one that works best for you. Many companies need a more complex solution than what Basecamp offers. I'd like to add OnePlace to the list also, as it can offer detailed project hierarchies for the business teams that need more detail than what some others can offer. The link is http://www.oneplacehome.com to take a look.

Project Management Software
i have been testing Copper for the past three months and it is far superior to the above 3 choices - see www.copperproject.com. I guess because it is an Australian company it is not as heavily marketed or well known as BaseCamp and others but in my opinion it is far superior.

Project Management Software
What I am trying to do is decide what software best works for us. I noticed that you didn't look at @Task. How does it stack up?

We are a QA/QC company. What we need is to find a package that best fits our need. I don't know that I care whether it is self-hosted or not. What would you say would be the top 3 candidates for our purposes.

Thanks in advance.
