  • Trying to choose project management software--HELP

I'm a marketing director for a software vendor. Needless to say, I have at least 15 projects going at any one time. And that's only if I count them BEFORE 9:00! I need a way to keep up with them--big deadlines and all the interim ones leading there. But what I really want is something that will allow me to print out my calendar and see clearly what is threatening to slap me in the head each week. I've tried Intellisys Project Desktop, but it doesn't do the calendar thing quite the way I need it. Gantt charts are good, but I really need to see s regular calendar with all that’s due. Any suggestions?

A great web-based option is BaseCamp. You can see a review of the program we've written here. BaseCamp was designed for team communication/collaboration, but has a great calendar feature that syncs via iCal with programs like Outlook. This way, milestones can be added to your Outlook calendar and email reminders are sent from BaseCamp to you 48 hours prior to a milestone due date.

Of course, there are hundreds of PM programs out there. One of our writers wrote an article titled, "The 5 Most Popular Project Management Programs According to Delicious Users." It's a great article to speaks to those programs other PM's are raving about. In fact, BaseCamp is at the top of their list, as well.

Of course, we have many software reviews you can check out here, too.

    Hope this helps.

I'd also like to recommend dotProject if your budget for PM software is small or nonexistent. It's one of the items covered in the article listed by Deanna above, and it has been reviewed on its own by Ronda Roberts as well.

I recently started using the software for a special project that I'm managing, and I'm very impressed with all the capabilities of the application. We were able to get the software up and running within 15 minutes of deciding it was the solution we wanted to try, and the interface is intuitive enough that you don't have to spend tons of time reading help files before diving right in and setting up your first project. Best of all, it's free which was exactly the price my team needed to make it fit into our current PM budget.

I would like to offer you our software, We are an Irish company that has developed an Online PM software called TeamworkPM We built it because we started to find we were fast annoying our customers by forgetting to get back to them and forgetting about tasks we had to do. So during evenings after work of a year we starting building Teamwork. It worked really well for us inside Digital Crew so we went about releasing it last year and we have had great feedback from customers all over the world.

I would love to hear your view on it and to see what other feature you would like to see in it.

    Cheers

    Sam

I am a Project Manager and have found a Project Management Software which Shares Microsoft Project schedules with team. Includes Project Portfolio Management, Issue Tracking, Risk Management, Timesheet Management, Document Management, Calendar Management, Forums, Reports and Project Dashboard.

A good hosted Project Management software that suits my EPM needs is called valleyspeak project server, which I found at http://www.valleyspeak.com. One of the main reasons why I like the software is the fact that I could continue to work in Microsoft Project 2007 while sharing my Microsoft Project plans with my teams.

ValleySpeak Project Server provides 100% 2-way integration with Microsoft Project 2007. While Project Managers can continue to plan and manage projects using Microsoft Project 2007 as usual, Team Members can now view and submit updates to the project plans in real time, simply by using any web browser.

Because it is a hosted service, I did not have to buy expensive software or deal with installation and maintenance headaches. The functionality that I have with valleyspeak to manage my geographically dispersed teams works well for me. We also evaluated Basecamp and some other solutions but were not impressed.

I have found a tool called Attask project management software(www.attask.com) that offers dashboards(maybe what your looking for) that have really helped me stay on top of which tasks/projects are the most important to accomplish this week and today by my team. The tool shows how critical certain tasks/projects are and when they need to be accomplished by.
