Skype is a software program that allows you to make telephone calls on the Internet, also called a voice over IP system. If your contacts have Skype, calls are free. If they don't, you can still use Skype to call cell phones, other computers, land lines and save a lot of money. The Skype software download is free for basic service, but beyond their no-cost features, you can use Skype on a pay-as-you-go method where land line calls are only $0.21 per minute.
When I looked at my two-line phone bill, even with all the "plans" I had that were supposed to save me money, I was paying around $250 per month. That doesn't include my DSL line that is another $35 bucks. By eliminating my land lines, I found I can use my computer and Skype to reach others on their cell phones, have calls forwarded to my Skype account, and the rewards came by savinging around $3,000 annually.
Skype's biggest savings happen when people you are calling have Skype too. When you both have Skype, you can video conference, conference call, and instant message all for free. Skype offers both the pay as you go feature and monthly subscriptions that can save you even more. The more I used Skype, the more features I found, and I'm paying a lot less than with conventional phone lines where you only really save if you call during their off-peak hours.
Skype offers lots of features. I was skeptical on the "clear" voice feature that Skype promised, but I found it's as clear as my regular long distance land line. Skype boasts these additional features for businesses whether it's a home or conventional office:
- Face to face video conferencing to anywhere in the world
- Conference calling with work teams or clients
- Mobile phone downloads for people on the move
- File sharing through the instant message feature
- The ability to see if your contacts already use Skype
- Call forwarding to your computer or to your clients
- Business control panel features to organize your contacts
- Unlimited calls to one country; or if your business is worldwide, Skype reaches thirty six other countries.
For some, it's hard to pull the plug on a telephone and land line, but with headsets, clear voice, and free calling features no long distance company can offer, Skype is on the move as a favorite way to keep in touch. For more business savings, you can even partner with Skype to promote and advertise your business.
I didn't need an IT person to install Skype, and the system was up and running in minutes, easy to use, and a smart choice for saving money on your phone bill.
