The Google Sidebar has plenty of gadgets available that can make it easier to work from home using your computer. You'll be more productive once you set it up to meet your own specific needs, no matter what work you do.

Make use of some desktop gadgets

Working from home means making sure you are efficient and don’t waste any time in getting things done. Most home workers will use a computer to some extent, and if that includes you then Google Desktop Gadgets might well come in useful.

I use the gadgets in a permanently floating sidebar, so I can always see them when I am working. First of all you need to download the Desktop from http://desktop.google.com. Then you can get started finding the gadgets that will help you.

Finding gadgets to help you with your home working

Once you have installed the sidebar, click on the plus sign in the top right hand corner. This will bring up a screen that allows you to choose from all the gadgets that are available.

There are basic gadgets such as clocks and calendars, but you’ll find plenty of other add ons that will help you during your daily working life. And they are easy to add, try and then delete if they don’t meet your needs.

You’ll find them grouped in several different ways – such as newest and recommended for example. But they are also grouped under headings such as finance, tools, technology and communication.

Selecting and adding gadgets to your desktop

If there is something specific you need, you can search for it by typing in what you’re looking for in the search box. You’ll find it in the top right hand corner of the pop up screen.

For example, if you search for ‘to do’ you will find a couple of to do lists that you can choose from. I find these particularly useful as I can see exactly what work I have to do at a glance, without searching through a pile of paperwork. And you can sort them according to date order, or whatever works best for you.
