AutoComplete is a feature of Microsoft Word that enables users to automatically insert, format, or correct text quickly as they type. Word comes with a variety of AutoComplete settings already installed, including automatic inserts of dates and corrections of common words like The.

Creating an AutoText Setting

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will create an AutoText of your name.

  1. To begin, click Tools on the menu bar and hover down and click on AutoCorrect. This will bring up the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  2. Click on the AutoText tab at the top of the dialog box.
  3. You will see a list of AutoText settings that Word has already installed. Above the list is a box titled Enter AutoText Entries Here. Type your name in this box and click the Add button.
  4. Your name now appears in the list of AutoText entries.
  5. Click the OK button at the bottom of

the dialog box to return to your document.

  6. Begin typing your name. As you type, Word will suggest an AutoText entry (in this case, your name) directly above the text you are typing.
  7. Hit enter to insert the AutoText into your document.

Creating an AutoCorrect Setting

We will now create an AutoCorrect setting for the word I’m.

  1. To begin, click Tools on the menu bar and hover down and click on AutoCorrect. This will bring up the AutoCorrect dialog box.
  2. Click on the AutoCorrect tab at the top of the dialog box.
  3. You will see a checklist of AutoCorrect features. Feel free to look through this list and uncheck any boxes that you don’t want Word to correct.
  4. Underneath the checklist is a list of AutoCorrect words and symbols that Word already has installed and will automatically correct as you type. Above this list are two text boxes: one titled Replace and the other titled With.
  5. In the Replace box, type Im. Be sure to leave out the apostrophe.
  6. In the With box, type I’m.
  7. Click the Add button and then the OK button to return to your document.
  8. Type the word Im (again, leave out the apostrophe) and then hit the space bar. Word will automatically correct the spelling of the word.
  9. If, for some reason, you wanted the word Im to appear in a document without the apostrophe, simply click Edit on the menu toolbar and hover down to and click Undo AutoFormat (this needs to be done after Word has already corrected the word).

Customizing AutoFormat Features

In the AutoCorrect dialog box (see step 1 in the sections above) you will see 2 other tabs: 1 called AutoFormat and the other called AutoFormat As You Type. Both of these tabs have a

list of features that Word will automatically format for you. Go through the lists and uncheck any feature that you do not want. I personally do not like when Word automatically formats web address into hyperlinks, so I unchecked the box marked Replace Internet and Network Paths with Hyperlinks under the AutoFormat tab.

Customizing Word

This series will walk you through a variety of options that will enable you to customize Microsoft Word.
