Create a workspace that works for you and your children by offering computer time, mommy time, and a place to learn and play while you work.
Toys, toys, toys!
If you’re not careful, your children’s toys can quickly take over your office space. However, the point of including toys in this area is not to create a playroom, rather it is a means to keep your children entertained as you work. Choose a few toys to bring into your office. Some suggestions include a puzzle, doll, toy truck, and blocks. Avoid toys that make noise in this room. They will only serve as a distraction to you. Store toys on a bottom shelf or in a storage container.
Learning Center
If you have the space in your office, it might be worthwhile to create a learning center for your children. You can use a small desk on table stocked with paper, pencils, coloring crayons, coloring books, glue, and art supplies. You can also print free coloring pages off from many websites. Do a quick Google search for free coloring pages (or try a searching for a specific coloring page by typing in something like free High School Musical coloring pages).
Computer Time
If you have an older computer that you no longer use, consider setting it up for your children. Install some educational programs onto it to provide your children with a learning opportunity. I installed a math program on an old computer for my daughter who was struggling with math in school. By allowing her to use the program while I was working, her math scores have increased. This is also a good time to allow your older children to use the internet. You will be close by to monitor the sites they are visiting, making it a safer experience for them.
Child-Proofing
If you have an infant or toddler who will be sharing the space with you, it is important that you childproof your office. Insert outlet plugs, tuck away computer cords, and keep equipment out of reach. It is also wise to invest in locks for your cabinets and drawers in order to keep your documents and paperwork safe from tiny hands. If there is not a door in your office, install a gate to keep your child safe and contained.
