Wallpaper: Just like the wallpaper covering the walls in your home, wallpaper on a computer is a simple decorative element that provides a background. A computer's wallpaper covers the background of the screen, or desktop, and the icons hover over the wallpaper, much like framed pictures hang on the wallpaper in your home. Computer wallpaper can be a digital photo or a special image file created specifically to function as computer wallpaper.
Wave file: An audio file format developed by Microsoft, wave files have the extension .WAV. They are not playable by all audio players, and are somewhat bulky to transfer and download.
Webcam: A webcam is
a small, video-recording device that plugs into your computer and allows you to create videos that are instantly transferred and played on your computer.
Website: A website is a particular space on the web, or a set of webpages on the Internet. Different websites are generally differentiated by domain names, or "addresses," such as "Google.com" or "MySpace.com." Websites range from huge, with literally thousands of different webpages within a site, to very simple and small, with perhaps only a single "page" forming the entire website.
Web-based: Web-based refers to the basic way a program or application functions; if a program is downloaded to your hard drive and must have access to the hard drive in order to be used, it is computer-based. If a program or application, however, is accessible to you from any computer via the Internet, it is web-based, which means that the program itself is hosted on a server which you access by means of the Internet.
Windows: Perhaps the most well-known of operating systems, Windows is the OS produced by Microsoft and loved or hated by millions of users. Its competitors are Apple (by Macintosh) and open source operating systems, such as Linux and Ubuntu.
Wireless: Wireless technology allows a user to transmit and receive information via electromagnetic waves rather than through actual wires. A wireless Internet connection means that the user does not have to plug in to a DSL cable or a modem, but can simply log in to the wireless network, which enables the user to then access the Internet via that wireless network.
Word: Part of the Microsoft Office Suite, Word is Microsoft's word processing program.
Wordpress: One of the most popular blogging platforms available, Wordpress is an open source application that can be downloaded and
used to create a blog or a complete website. In addition, Wordpress.com is a blogging platform that allows users to create blogs using the Wordpress program in a web-based way, so no downloading is necessary. Wordpress is very customizable, easy to understand, and has a large web presence with many help forums and support communities.
