Home Office Tech terms that begin with the letter "V" and are often used in the Bright Hub Home Office Tech channel, from Vista to video to voice recognition.

The Letter V

Video: A video is a visual method of presenting information. A video is created by placing many images together, one after another, and "playing" them forward at a high speed, so that they are seen as one streamlined image with motion.

Virtual: The word "virtual" can have many different meanings, but in computer/tech terms, it refers to anything on the computer or on the Internet that is a representation, or "virtual" version, of the same thing in the real world. So a computer program that provides a way to put up little "sticky notes" on your computer desktop would be providing you with "virtual Post-Its." Virtual versions of a real-world item perform the same function as the real world item, at least to some degree, but usually do not have any actual physical presence.

Virtual Assistant: A virtual assistant is a rather recent phenomenon that has become very successful. A virtual assistant is a real person who performs computer-based services, as an assistant, in a telecommuting capacity. So you might hire a virtual assistant to do editing, figure checking, research, or to return phone calls and yet never actually "meet" your assistant. In fact, you and your virtual assistant may live many, many miles away from each other. A virtual assistant career is a great choice for the home office worker.

Virus: A virus is a malevolent program designed to invade and take control of some or all of a computer's or network's functions. Some viruses do not effect the complete performance of a computer, but simply cause little glitches to occur that may slow down productivity and be irritating. Other viruses may erase hard drive memory, prevent programs from opening, prevent programs from closing, download and install multiple unwanted programs, or impede the processor from working properly.

Virus Protection: Virus protection includes security measures such as a firewall, which prevents nonusers from entering the computer system or network, and virus protection software, which prevents viruses from being downloaded and installed onto a computer or network.

Vista: The most recent operating system to be offered by Windows, Vista is a fully functional desktop environment that comes, in differing levels, equipped with standard Microsoft programs.

VLookup: VLookup, or Vertical Lookup, is a function of Microsoft Excel. It allows the user to find, sort, and rearrange data in different columns of an Excel spreadsheet.

Voice Over IP (VoIP): VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is a method of telephone communications that uses an existing Internet connection to transmit telephone conversations.

Voice Recognition Software: Voice, or Speech, Recognition Software is a program or set of programs that converts the spoken word into data (text) on a computer. The user speaks into a microphone of some kind, and the program converts the audio into a textual file.
