Home Office Tech terms that start with the letter "U" and are often used in the Bright Hub Home Office Tech channel, from upgrade to uninterruptible power supply.

The Letter U

Ubuntu: An open-source, Unix-based operating system, Ubuntu has gained popularity as an easy-to-use, simple yet powerful operating system. It is free and works on most computer, though some older systems may encounter problems with out-of-date drivers.

Unix: Unix is a powerful, multitasking operating system designed in the 1970s. Many open-source operating systems, such as Linux, Sun Microsystems, and Ubuntu, are based on the original Unix system.

Upgrade: An upgrade for a computer or computer program could be an improvement to a component of the hardware, such as the installation of additional memory or a better graphics card. Or an upgrade might refer to installing the latest version of a software program, in which previous errors/bugs have been fixed and new features added.

Undelete: To undelete is to do exactly what the term sounds like: to recover a previously deleted file or program. Sometimes the process of undeleting is simple, as many systems move deleted file to a temporary "trash" holding spot for a certain amount of time. If the file is still in the "trash" spot, the user can access it and choose to move it out of the "trash" and back to its original location. If, however, the file has actually been deleted and is no longer in the "trash" bin, the user must access and search the hard drive to find the file and restore it to accessiblity.

Uninterruptible Power Supply: An uninterruptible power supply is a backup system for keeping power surges and/or failures from effecting your computer system. It evens out power surges and also provides a battery backup in case of power failure. There are different types of uninterruptible power supplies, appropriate for protecting the single home office computer to the big rack of servers.

Universal Network: A universal network is not something that exists, fully, yet, but it has long been contemplated, studied, designed, advocated, and more and more components are becoming available. A universal network is, in theory, a network that integrates all the different types of telecommunication together seamlessly. It would integrate the different systems in place for the Internet, cell phones, video broadcast networks, and cable tv into one so that information can be transferred from one part of the network to another without interruption or formatting problems.

USB Cable: A USB, or Universal Serial Bus cable, is a particular type of computer cable that is used to connect different types of devices, such as cell phones and digital cameras, to a computer.

User: A user is an individual (or an account) with the ability to access a computer, a network, a program, or a web-based application. Different types of users have different abilities. Users with administrative status can access and change all the settings of a system; more limited users can access certain components but are limited from making major system changes.
