The Letter S

Security: Security refers to the ease, or difficulty, with which a computer system or network can be accessed, especially by nonvalid users, whether they be individual people or deviant programs (spyware, viruses). The usual minimum security precautions taken for a computer are to have an active firewall and anti-virus software installed and up-to-date. Individual settings vary within a firewall, and can be set to a lesser or greater degree of security depending on how many users there are and what type of information is involved.

Settings: Settings are the preferences set by individual users for their desktop appearance, browser features, software programs, and overall computer function and appearance. Some settings are accessible and alterable only by a user with administrative privileges, so that accidental deletion of pertinent files or programs will not happen. Other settings, such as the desktop background, font size, and number of icons on a desktop, can usually be determined by the individual user.

Software: The hardware of a computer system is the actual physical components, such as hard drive, printer, mouse, and graphics card. The software is the stuff that you use on these physical components; it is through software programs that you access your hard drive, create documents and then print them on your printer, point your mouse to an icon, and view the photos and videos that are created by your graphics card. Software programs range from simple to extremely complex, and offer as wide a variety of function as there are users.

Spam: Unwanted email is called spam. It is also referred to as "junk mail" or "junk email," but spam has become the most popular term for the deluge of unsolicited product offerings, meet-your-mate service ads, and other items that appear in your inbox. Spam is, at the least, a very annoying and time-consuming part of email; at the worst, it can conceal damaging viruses and, if opened, will download those viruses to your computer. Most email clients now include spam filters, which use particular keywords and formats to identify spam mail and put it in a separate folder from your inbox. You can usually review the spam folder, mark any emails that are valid as such, and delete the rest in bulk.

Storage: Storage is the space a computer has for keeping data such as documents, photos, videos, music and audio files, and program data files. You can increase your computer's storage capacity by purchasing additional memory for it. Storage is also a pertinent factor in web-based applications. For example, different web-based email clients offer different amounts of storage for archived mail, photos, and attached files.

Sticky Notes: The virtual equivalent of the much-loved Post-It notes, there are several different applications that offer a sticky note function, including Sticker Lite and Stickies.

Sublimation: Sublimation is a process that uses heat to put a printed design on an end-produt, such as coffee mug, a t-shirt, or a picture frame. Sublimation printing is a fairly low-cost way to expand a home business and allows the home office worker to create and offer many different, personalized products for clients.
