Home Office Tech terms that start with the letter “D” and are used often in the BrightHub Home Office Tech channel, from data to drivers.

The Letter D

Data: Information which is recorded in some way understandable to either a human or (especially) to a computer. Humans use letters, numbers, and images most often to record and share data; computers use binary most often.

Deductions: A business deduction is an expense that you can claim on your taxes and thus have the cost of said expense "deducted" from the total taxes you owe.

Delete: The magic key that makes it all go away, delete is the computing version of white-out. It can be used to erase a single character from a document being edited or a file or a whole folder full of files on a computer. In some applications, the delete key is permanent and items once deleted cannot be recovered. In other applications (such as most email programs), deleting something (such as an email) will cause it to move to a Trash folder, where it will remain either until the Trash folder is manually "emptied" or until a scheduled "empty" time occurs.

Desktop: Both the physical, usually flat surface at which the home office worker does his or her work and the virtual environment of the computer or internet application from which work is performed. "Desktop" also refers to a type of computer: a desktop computer is one with a separate monitor and processor, whereas a laptop is a single unit which incorporates both monitor and processor into one single piece.

Desktop Manager: A graphic user interface that allows the computer user to access the computer system and run applications without using command lines.

Desktop Publishing: A whole world of design, printing, and publishing options is encapsulated by the term desktop publishing; basically, desktop publishing is anything designed on a computer and printed/published from a computer. Desktop publishing could result in a personal holiday greeting card, scrapbook pages, a professional portfolio, spiral-bound policy and procedures manual, or formal presentation.

Drivers: Simply put, a drive is the computer code that receives commands and communicates them to the appropriate program to be executed. Drivers are necessary for running programs, having sound and graphics and internet access on a computer.
