Starting up a home office is a big decision, and not one usually taken lightly. It has its perks, of course, however it isn’t an entirely cost-free venture. Creating a space that is conducive to productive work is an investment.

List of requirements

The first order of business is to establish what hardware is essential to the line of business. Communication plays a substantial role in any business, whether large or small, so a landline connection or a mobile phone, if not both, is absolutely necessary. These instruments form the most basic layer of hardware.

A computer is essential

Usually, most home offices require some form of computing, whether data processing, data entry, word processing, image processing, among many possible functions. An email address and a well-designed website allow the business to open up to a wider clientele, perhaps even international. Therefore a computer is now an indispensable part of an office. One can opt for a desktop, which usually incorporates higher configurations, ease of use and ergonomic advantages. In addition, desktop computers tend to have larger screens, full keyboards and are definitely less expensive than their portable counterparts. However, laptops have one definite edge over desktops – that being portability. This is a consideration for people who require to be on the move all the time.

Internet connection

Continuing with setting up communications within the home office environment, the next essential component is an Internet connection. The Web is a rich resource for business, whether knowledge, research, competition, even clients and suppliers. Additionally, to maintain a website and an email account properly, the Internet is a must. Setting up an Internet connection is no longer tedious, and in fact, it is advisable to invest in a broadband connection as opposed to dial-up. The cost difference is minimal, and if there is a lot of data traffic, a broadband connection will not only save time, but money as well.

Choosing the right printer

Computer peripherals like printers, fax machines and scanners depend completely upon the usage and the type of business. Most of these functions now come bundled in one package, which may be expensive for one device but works out cheaper that buying individual machines. Mostly, a scanner and a printer should suffice, as they can double up as a copier in a crunch. Computers that have an Internet connection through a landline can also be used to send faxes, which is handy especially since documents don’t then need to be printed.

Choosing the right printer for business requirements isn’t necessarily tricky. The first step to going about this task is to determine a budget. Then, the next step is to establish what kind of printing will be necessary. For example, printing occasional documents and the odd picture doesn’t require a laser printer. A laser printer is initially a large investment, but the replacements are cheaper. Laser printers are good for large scale printing requirements. An inkjet printer is a cheaper investment in the beginning although the cartridges are on the higher side. Inkjets are best used for a smaller scale of printing requirements. The final decision to make is whether or not there will be a great deal of colour printing. If the colour printing is minimal, it is advisable to invest in a black and white printer and send out for the occasion colour document.

Miscellaneous tidbits

Personally, I have installed an above-average speaker system in my home office, as I can play music in the background. I find soothing music and lots of greenery is very conducive to productivity. Other little additions include an external microphone, a hands-free headset, and an external hard disk. The microphone and headset comes in handy for video conferencing, and the external hard disk allows me to have an archival option for all the files I may need, without them cluttering up my main workstation.

There are loads of little gadgets that can make working at home easy and uncomplicated. Browsing through a showroom, I have found lots of things that I didn’t know existed, and now I can’t do without.
