I have found myself travelling between my ‘home’ base, a second home and numerous on the road destinations. I have often found that I need a critical file that I have left on a computer that isn’t with me. At first I thought the simple solution was to use a small portable hard drive, like the SeaGate Freestyle with the capacity of several hundred MB. That proved acceptable when I was in the same remote location for a long period of time.
I next employed the use of a “J” or small portable drive in the 4 GB range which I kept on my key chain. Over time the weight of the keys effected the physical
connection between the drive and the computer I was using. It worked OK for a laptop since the keys were resting on a table, but not so well for the desk tops where the dangling keys caused an alignment problem.
Many years ago, while working for a major software company I had a major IT operational epiphany. I figured out that my whole life was on Outlook. When my boss asked me to submit a report about my activities I simply went through my sent file in Reverse Chronological order. I also made another discovery at the same time: all the files I had sent individuals were attached to the e-mails I sent. Consequently when I needed to recover a critical file, I went into the sent folder and double clicked to open it up, or right clicked and “Saved As”.
For the last two years I’ve been back in entrepreneur mode and have executed assignments for a number of clients. Many of these assignments required the generation of very large documents. I also found myself working on as many as three different computers. Often I needed a file that was not on the computer I was working on, nor was it on any of my portable drives.
The solution was rather elegant, simple and
inexpensive. Since I have several e-mails (4 or 5 at last count) I could e-mail the file from one account to the other. I could then save the e-mails using the free storage provided by the mail provider (e.g. AOL, Yahoo, Google, etc.). This technique has served me well and I hope it will work for you too.
