Being in a new job can certainly cause anxiety and diffidence. But remember there is always a learning curve. All employers are aware of this and will allow you enough time to get settled in before assessing your performance.

    Ways to Cope with New Job Stress It is common knowledge that any new job entails stress as you are new to your colleagues and bosses, and also exposed to an unfamiliar work culture. But it's still a good idea to find ways and means of overcoming this new job stress rather letting it get the best of you.

    A new job generally causes stress as the incumbent has to undergo a difficult learning curve and has to assimilate a whole lot of fresh information. One way to cope up with this stress is to endure the first couple of weeks nonchalantly and retain one’s poise. Learn the intricacies of the new job in a calm, calculated way until you gain adequate mastery.

    Coping with New Job Stress - Some Useful Tips

    • After work hours, make it a point to completely unwind to get rid of the day’s fatigue. You can watch a television program, read some magazines, play some indoor games or take part in any other activity that you find entertaining.
    • If you are fond of outdoor activities, you can do some simple physical exercises. Do a bit of walking or running around, spend time watering the garden, ride a bicycle, perform yoga or visit the gym for a workout. All these activities will help you de-stress in a big way.
    • You can, by all means, socialize but avoid spending time with colleagues or those associated with your work – after office hours.
    • If you are more of an introvert, you can sit quietly in a corner and meditate, read religious literature, or listen to any taped spiritual discourses. In short, take your mind completely off your workplace worries.
    • Free your mind of all thoughts connected to your work when retiring to bed. Try to sleep soundly and do not wake up the following morning with workplace ideas in your mind. Please remember that your job is a part of life, but not your whole life.

    Readjustment at the Workplace

    • Try to make friends with your new colleagues as fast as you can and make sure they are able to interact with you with ease. Being a newcomer, you will have to necessarily take the initiative in befriending your colleagues and not wait for them to walk up to you.
    • If you are unfamiliar many things around you, instead of getting bogged down about things you do not understand, pick up the courage to ask your colleagues for clarification. This way, you can save time and quickly grasp what is expected of you.
    • You can never learn if you are shy, reserved and withdrawn. Never hesitate to seek explanations about things you do not know or readily understand. Remember, all your colleagues were once greenhorns when they joined the organization and leaned their jobs only by shedding inhibitions.
    • Do not set yourself ambitious goals when you are still new at your job.
    • Your boss will be reasonable and will allow you sufficient time to learn the job before attempting to assess your performance. Do not develop the feeling that you are not straightaway useful to the company. Take time to learn about your job and acquire new skills.

    On a concluding note, try to avoid unfounded fears such as – "Will I be able to do the job expected of me?" or "Will I will lose the job?". Abraham Lincoln once said, “The only thing to fear is fear itself." If you have self-belief, all things will fall in place and you will be able to shed your inhibitions and overcome new job stress within the shortest span of time.
