Our Tivo... joined our wireless computer network

The holiday weekend included a visit from our son Stephen and his girlfriend Carrie. He's our household Tivo expert.

On one of his previous visits he upgraded the Tivo hard drive from the 40 GB to 250 GB. I bought the new drive and he swapped it out with the new one without losing any of the recorded shows or having to record them over. He left me with some homework items to do in order to have the Tivo join our computer wireless network.... buying a couple more gadgets.

This time he finished tying the Tivo into the system. A little wireless antenna cost me $15 and it connects to the Tivo by a A-A USB cable. The cable was my lowest purchase ever on E-Bay... a penny (plus shipping of course). We had to whittle down the rubbery end of the USB to make it go far enough into the antenna to connect, but once there, the light came on and the Tivo was ready to join the network.

I downloaded Tivo's desktop software and added the Tivo to the wireless network. The signal strength 2 floors below the router is a solid 70%. To test it I copied a dozen recorded shows from the Tivo to my XP laptop... they play fine in Windows Media Player.

The Tivo is down in the exercise area. With it on our network, I don't have to go there and feel guilt to watch a recorded show without being on the treadmill. Thanks Stephen.

I keep twisting Stephen's arm to, instead of showing and telling me all there is to know about my Tivo.... write it into a few articles and publish them on this channel. He says he'll do it one of these days.

Here's an opening post to kickoff blogs in the Digital Video channel. I'm in the middle of writing a batch of articles for the channel, reviewing those written by others, and generally ramping up in all areas.

Look around you today to see how much of your world is video and done digitally.... that's what this channel is about. You might be a viewer of digital TV.... and everyone in the USA will be by next year... or a professional video guy or gal. To the extent we can help you understand, use, and enhance your digital video experiences, we'll be doing it.
