So You Want to Start Video Editing?

Film StripWhen you think of the term video editing now, you probably envision a computer. However, before digital video cameras were as common place, video editing still took place of course. Linear video editing refers to the practice of editing videotape. Yes, those old fashioned strips of film you may still recognize.

This process required one to sort through film strips, joining together scenes in the proper sequences. The process required a vision and a gift for story-telling, knowing what sections needed to be cut and what should be kept to keep the continuity of the story and the mood. The rejected scenes would literally be cut out of the reel with a razor blade and left lying on the floor.

The Switch to Digital

In the digital age, it is now more common to practice non-linear video editing. The term may sound imposing, but all it means is editing done on a computer. This allows you to skip between scenes (so you don’t have to work from the beginning to the end). It also allows you to preview how things look. If you don’t like it, you can go back to change it.

This process may actually seem easier in many ways, as it has removed much of the manual labor and forethought. The video editor can construct scenes, adjust volume, add special effects and audio and visual effects with a click of the mouse. However, the job still requires a vast amount of knowledge and expertise as well as a creative eye and gift for story-telling. Much of this can be learned through practice, experience and experimentation.

Home Video Editing

Recent home video editing programs have also made this much more accessible to the amateur videographer. Most computers or laptops will come with basic video programs already installed such as iMovie on the Mac and Windows Movie Maker for PC Computers. If you’re not satisfied with that there are dozens of other options, including some free programs, or if you’re willing to spend some money, more high quality software suitable for professionals.
