RE: Windows Movie Maker in Windows 7
I run the movie maker that ships with Vista straight off the Vista partition of my hard drive, no problems with doing that so far and allows me to do everything I used to do in Movie Maker 6 in vista now in Windows 7. kind of cheap that Microsoft cut Movie Maker out of Windows 7 if you ask me.

A number of users have posted that MM6, copied from Vista, runs on Windows 7. I'm not surprised... that'll mean all versions of Movie Maker will run on it.

DLLs need to be registered to have all features work... and even then I'm yet sure that 3rd party extras like transitions and effects can be ported over.

Each winter I talk to 3 classes of high school students who take a class in Movie Maker, about 85 students in all. Peg the teacher is thinking about the same kinds of things.

We would have to chat over lunch for a more detailed picture of the shool's outlook for computers and video making/editing hardware and software.

From what you say, I can only guess that your shool provides some mini-DV camcorders for the sudents to use, and you also allow them to bring in footage from their own or families' cameras/camcorders?

If your goal is to focus on the editing, it seems you could do it with a library of school clips and files. That would let you standardize lesson plans and eliminate or reduce the need for file conversions.

If the goal is to have the students learn about the overall video shooting/editing/producing process at a pro-sumer level, then the new complexities as they emerge should be folded into the lesson plans. That would start with the differet camcorders and file types, include conversion software, and the various avenues to distribute finished movies. If you stay with Windows operating systems, Adobe Premiere Elements and Premiere Pro might be better long term choices than Movie Maker.

Regardless of which hardware and software tools are used, the basics remain...

Good comment.

Teaching Movie Editing Skills
I need some advice and hope you can give it. I teach in a medium size private school. We have two computer labs with 30 computers in each. In the one lab, we have XP . In the other lab, Vista and Movie Maker. My students use video cameras, download video using firewires and then use Movie maker to edit. I want to continue to teach the editing skills and how to create good movies. But, the simple, "push a button and upload to youtube" is all I seem to find. Most of the new video cameras download in a great and simple usb fashion but then download in a quicktime format that I have compatibility issues with in Moviemaker. Or, I have to download the accompanied program with the camera which has little editing capabilities. Now, I am reading Movie maker is even being phased out....What's a computer teacher to do!? Trying to teach and create a quality movie, with transitions, music, and substance is becoming harder and harder! Any advice, suggestions or tips would be very appreciated!

Salami,

My Windows 7 computer started life as an XP MCE system... I've not done anything special to setup Windows Media Player and video files are playing pretty well on it. There are too many factors to make a one-line fits all response: WMP version, speed and condition of your hard drive(s), video card and driver, type of files playing... and settings, etc. The microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video newsgroup would be a good place to ask about it.... provide some details better responses.

Walk... 1394 is another name for firewire on a camcorder/computer, as is iLink... for pictures of some camcorder/computer connections see my website's Setup Movie Maker > Hardware page.

Will the Windows live download work with a 1394 port or only firewire?

So how about
Windows Media Player SUCKING on 7?

Movies I could play on XP do not do so well on 7.

The video is behind the audio and will show a new frame every five seconds.

Got the answer? t9p1@yahoo.com

Capture video from mini-DV on MM2.6
Raymond.... MM2.6 is a stipped down version of MM2.1 for Vista users who have problems running MM6. Capturing video from a mini-DV camcorder is one of the features Microsoft dropped from it.

You would connect the camcorder by firewire and use the import wizard, which should automatically be opened or an option in a pick list when you turn the camcorder on and switch it to VCR mode..
