To me, as a layperson, video represents interaction. Pure and simple, I can see what I missed. And, if I didn’t miss it, I can experience it again!
My little corner in BrightHub is about growth and development of “organizations” to a large extent. Now, that organization might be defined as my family, my insurance business or my PTO responsibilities. And, as life unfolds, it could become another “to-be-determined” organization.
We held an event at school last week called Special Interest Day. Weeks and weeks of planning result in this one day event that also employs at least 50 volunteers. In today’s day and age, as a school, we find it very, very difficult to recruit volunteers for this type of event. The world is just plain busy.
To encourage participation, I felt it might be beneficial to videotape a few clips of the day’s activities and post them online for parents to view. Weekly, I create a PTO newsletter that I host online. The newsletter is all about what is happening at the school, where we’re spending money, businesses that have helped us, etc. With the introduction of video content, I hope to give the parents that can’t or don’t want to be there a little peek at what they’re missing.
So, last week I posted a link with a little clip of these ultra-excited children during a mock game show portion of Special Interest Day. From the Jeopardy music playing in the background, the buzzer they were excited to punch, and the mom yelling “come on down” to the next participants, I hope for the video to convey a bit of the day’s feeling.
My hope is that parents will peer into this small film and think “that actually looks fun”. They’ll promptly call me to sign on to volunteer at the next event! My usual Pollyanna view but we’ll see what happens…
