Introduction

In digital video editing, a timeline or timeline view is all the components of the movie file. The clips appear on the timeline in the order and timing as they do in the movie. Each video-editing software program has some representation of the timeline or timeline view. It is in this view that adjustments are made to the length, transition and speed of the video and sound clips.

The timeline is made up of functions and elements that contribute to the edition of movies. Understanding the timeline is the first step to producing good video compositions. Listed are just a few of the timeline components that you may see on first glance.

Scale

The scale represents time in the “H:MM:SS:LL” format on the timeline. Every video and audio track’s duration is noted against the scale. Understanding your place on the scale is beneficial if keeping productions within a predetermined length of time is important to you. Functions like zoom in and zoom out are there to assist the scale for better editing by the user.

Video Tracks

Each video clip is represented on the video tracks. Most video editing software programs has two or more video tracks just in case special effects and transitions are needed. There isn’t a limit to how many clips can be placed on each track. Some prefer to have all the video clips on the same track or on individual tracks. The timeline shows the duration for each video clip.

Audio Tracks

The audio tracks work in the same way as the video tracks. Audio and video is never kept on the same track. Anytime a video with sound is added to the timeline, the video and audio is separated and added to individual tracks. Audio can also be added to audio tracks even if it isn’t accompanied by a video clip. The timeline allows editing of the audio clips as well. Cropping and mixing functions for audio is available with some editing programs.

Video Effects and Transition Tracks

Not all video-editing programs have separate tracks for the effects and transitions. Sometimes these items are just placed on the same tracks as the video. However, transitions and effects can be placed on their own video tracks or on effects and transition tracks if available. The effects and transition tracks on the timeline shows what effects and transitions are used, their duration and the speed in which they progress through the clips.

Conclusion

The timeline also offers tools to help the user while editing files. The slider, zoom in and zoom out are just some of the functions that makes the video-edition easier. The slider is a tool that allows the user to progress through the different video clips. Some software programs even offer lock and disable button to ensure accidental changes aren’t made.

Basically, the timeline allows you to control the flow of movie files. Effective editing can’t be done without the timeline and the tools that it offers. Combining video and audio tracks along with transitions and effects are just some of the wonders behind the timeline.
