Being able to customize your keyboard shortcuts not only personalizes your Photoshop program, but it also gives you more time to focus on what’s important. Your project.

To begin customizing, Select Edit, then Keyboard Shortcuts. To open the dialog box using the keyboard shortcut, press Alt+Shift+Ctrl+K. The Keyboard Shortcuts and Menus dialog box will appear. There will be two tabs: Keyboard Shortcuts and Menus. We will only be working with the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.

You will be presented with three options: Changing the shortcuts individually, creating a new set of keyboard shortcuts, or deleting a previous set. Before modifying any shortcuts, you must select a category from the drop down menu: Application Menus, Panel Menus, or Tools. After making a choice, you will be ready to set your keyboard shortcuts in the chosen category.

Changing Shortcuts

Select a command, and then click the corresponding Shortcut field to enter your shortcut. If the shortcut is already in use, Photoshop will alert you. You can click Undo Changes to erase the shortcut, or Accept and Go To Conflict to keep the changes. When selecting the Shortcut field, there are also more options located on the right:

  • Accept. Keeps the shortcut.
  • Undo. Deletes the latest keyboard shortcut.
  • Use Default. Returns the shortcut to default.
  • Add Shortcut. Create a new shortcut.
  • Delete Shortcut. Deletes a previously stored shortcut.
  • Summarize. Prompts you to save your set as a webpage for later viewing.

Create a New Set

In the Set section, next to the set drop down list, there will be three icons. Click the middle icon to begin creating your new set. The Save dialog box will open prompting you to create a file name and save the file.

Delete a Set

This is the last icon next to the set drop down list. It’s the small trash bin. To delete a set, simply select it, and then click the delete icon. You cannot delete the Photoshop Defaults set.

After you are done modifying your keyboard shortcuts and have made all necessary changes, click OK and you are done.

Learning to customize your keyboard shortcuts gives you a chance to make your Photoshop program your own! You can choose whatever is easiest for you, and have as many as you would like.
