If you are a small business owner who is looking to design your own letterhead, these tips can help you produce professional-looking results.

Designing your own letterhead for your small business can be a challenging and rewarding task. When you begin you may not have any idea where the process is going to take you, but when you are done you will have a visible representation of your company to the world. It may not be easy, but with a little bit of help, you can do this. Now, let's get ready to design your business letterhead.

The Steps

Step 1: Space

You need to figure out how much space you want to dedicate to your letterhead design. At a hard maximum, this should not be more than one-quarter of your page. One-sixth may be a better guideline for most businesses and professionals.

Step 2: Logo

Decide if you want to use your logo in your letterhead. The majority of the time this will be yes. Some logos, however, are too detailed to be reduced effectively. Others will look odd in black and white. Once you choose your logo (if you did), decide where to place it. Traditionally, the choices here are right side, left side, or center.

Step 3: Fonts

Now you have to choose the font that you want any writing, or contact information to appear in. The best way to do this is to simply add in your text, and put it in the correct position to begin to play with the fonts. Keep changing the texts font until you find the one that works best.

Step 4: Do you want a border or a line?

Some letterhead uses a border or a line to separate keep the letterhead from the rest of the letter. If you feel that one of these is a good idea then now is the time to choose one. You may want to experiment with a variety of different borders until you find the one that suits you best.

Step 5: Review

Looking at it as a whole is the step most new desktop publishers skip. Sure, you have been worried about compatibility all along, but a final check is needed. The best way to do this is to walk away for a few moments, then check over your work.

Now that you have created great letterhead for your small business, be sure to save it before you shut down. It is also a good idea to save it as a template, too.
