How to Use Windows Easy Transfer

This is part 6 of a 6 part article series. To read the introduction, please visit How to Transfer Your Photos from One Computer to Another

If your new computer is running Windows Vista, Windows Easy Transfer is probably the easiest way to get your photos from your old computer to your new computer. Better still, with Windows Easy Transfer you can also copy all your other files, folders, email settings (and messages) and user account settings to the new PC. Note that to be able to use Windows Easy Transfer, your old computer must be running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista.

With Windows Easy Transfer, you can transfer files using:

  • Your network connection
  • A USB drive
  • CDs or DVDs
  • An Easy Transfer Cable

Which method is best? That really depends on your setup and what you’ll be moving. If you have a home network and connect both the old computer and the new computer simultaneously, then that’s the easiest way to go. If you don’t have a home network and:

1. Don’t need to transfer a large amount of data, then CDs, DVDs or a flash drive are probably the cheapest options.

2. Need to transfer a large amount of data, then it may well be worth investing in an Easy Transfer cable (they are inexpensive and can be bought from just about any electronics store) as this will enable you to move your data with the least amount of hassle.

Note that if you decide to use a flash drive, you don’t need to worry too much about whether or not the drive will have enough space to hold everything as Windows Easy Transfer enables you to transfer your data in chunks. But a word of warning: if you will be transferring a large amount of data, doing it this way could prove to be extremely time consuming.

To get started, fire up your new computer (this being the computer to which you’ll be transferring the files) and click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Windows Easy Transfer.

And that’s as far as the process needs to be described. From here on in, the process is exceptionally easy and you’ll be guided every step of the way by the Windows Easy Transfer wizard.

In the unlikely event that you do find yourself needing additional help, simply click the Start button, click Help and Support and type in “Windows Easy Transfer”.
