With the rising demand for gas and the ever decreasing supply gas prices are only going to go up. As with every other aspect of our economy people are looking for ways to save money. As unlikely as it may seem, a credit card may actually help you save money. A gas credit card to be specific. When choosing a gas credit card there are several things you should consider. Such things as interest rate, store availability, and rewards programs are all important factors.
Interest Rate
Surprisingly, the interest rate isn’t as important as some of the other considerations because your goal is to never leave a balance from one month to another. If you know you are going to end up leaving a balance then this will actually need to be high on your priority list because if the interest rate is high then it will likely negate any of the benefits the card might otherwise provide.
Store Availability
Some cards are station specific. This is fine if there are only a limited number of stations in your area, if you always use the same station, or if the station you are considering has significantly less expensive gas than its competitors do. Other cards allow members to use the card at any gas station or at a number of participating gas station. These options are better for people who are going to be getting gas in a variety of locations and who cannot always be sure a specific brand will be available.
Rewards Programs
There are all sorts of reward programs available for gas credit cards. Some send members a rebate of 1-6% back at the end of a predetermined time. Make sure to read the fine print, however, because sometimes the percentage will drop after a few months. If the reward isn’t cash back make sure that you understand the terms and conditions associated. Some rewards points or offers can expire, and if you don’t get to use your rewards they are pointless.
Using a gas credit card allows you to budget your transportation costs. If you don’t make additional purchases on this card it really can save you money in the long run. By staying within the limits of your budget you will be able to pay off this card in full every month. This lets you earn the rewards and prevents you from paying interest.
