The best cell phones for teens are not necessarily the phone they like best. Read about these phones to find about options that help teach teens responsibility.

Many teens want the newest cell phones such as an IPhone, Blackberry, or the Palm Pre. The question has never been do teens want the latest and most expensive toy, but rather do they need it. The answer for most parents is no. However, many parents do want to be able to stay in contact with their teen when they are away from home and a cell phone is a great way to do that. With this in mind the following are the best cell phones for teens.

Firefly

The Firefly phone is a good choice for younger teens who may not have the best impulse control when it comes to texting. Parents can limit the number of texts teens can send or receive and can also control the phonebook which allows them to control who the phone can be used to call and who is allowed to call the phone. The Firefly use to be a very limited cell phone but now has the ability to play MP3s, games, and the ever popular ability to text.

Guardian Angel

A Guardian Angel phone is perfect for the parent who worries about where their child or teen is. It is a more grown up phone that allows the teen freedom but provides a feeling of security for parents. The cell phones allow parents to remotely monitor, via a website, the exact location of their teen and can even monitor how fast the teen is traveling. There are a number of phone styles available for a moderate price and minutes are added monthly with prepayment making it a great way for parents to control the cost of the monthly cell phone bill.

Prepaid Cell Phones

Almost every carrier and every retailer has a phone that is available for a prepaid plan. This is perfect for a teen who wants a cell phone and a parent who doesn’t want to pay for it. Parents often don’t want to pay for the pricier options of texting or downloads that teens want, and this is a great way to compromise. Let your teen pay for his phone with his own money. This will teach the teen that privileges such as a cell phone have a cost and will help them learn to budget not only their money but also their time on the phone. Several prepaid companies are now starting to offer Unlimited Talk and Text Plans, such as AT&T for $60/month, and Straight Talk for $45/month (including unlimited mobile web use.) Choosing an unlimited plan is an excellent way to be worry free and worry less about the bills.

I bought net 10 phones for my teenagers....This yr for Christmas my daughter is upgrading to the new samsung tedting type phone its on her list for Christmas. Im also going to get her 900 mins for 90 day service. We work it this way........If she asks for mins and a new phone on Christmas or any other holiday thats fine. If she wants mins inbetween she must work for it, she also uses her report card money she gets for earning all A's.
I dont think kids neccesarily need a cell phone, but if they are willing to put their own money toward it than I have no beef with that. Net 10 has been great to our family over the yrs. 10 cents a min for calling and 3 cents a min for texting. You just cant really beat that! I know some familys do the whole contract thing with all phones for everyone and pay out the ying yang per month with a 2 yr contract. We just cannot afford that and nor do I want too!
It seems so expensive for phones. I will stick with Net 10 and always with prepaid never again have a contract phone. Nickeled and dimed me to death!

Prepaid is the way to go
A great cell phone for teenager is with Tracfone. I got my daughter a Tracfone and pay about $7 a month when I buy her a $20 airtime card which provides her 60 talk time mins and 3 months of service. They had another option of a full year of service for $80 but you only get 240 minutes. I have been really happy with the service and my daughter loves having her own phone. Plus, you can't beat the price.

for a teen? having a guardian angel type of fone? thats like invading thier privacy on pretty much where they go and how they spend thier days with thier mates! But i also think that, that type of fone wud be suitable and most likely the best fone for a young child since they myt get lost of if anything happens to them..

I think the prepaid phone is actually the best idea for a kid just entering middle school. Not only does it introduce them to the basics of budgeting, it teaches responsibility. Many parents don't think kids should have phones this early. For me, it translates into peace of mind, especially at an age where most challenges begin. I bought my daughter a NET10 prepaid plan last year as a 5th grade graduation present. It wasn't a trendy phone with all the frills, but it's a phone - to be exact, an LG300G for under $30 which came with 300 minutes already included in the first month. So the deal was really incredible. The phone is actually quite good and sturdy - even the screen is color. As far as the prepaid plan, I only pay $15 a month and she gets 150 minutes, which is very good given the cost of 10 cents a minute and 3 cents a text. She manages her minutes really well so no need for extra minutes... yet!
