Save money on your heating bill through this three step process to reduce your heat usage, create heat more efficiently, and make the most of the heat you have. These tips will have you saving money in no time.

Step 1: Use Less Heat

One of the easiest methods for reducing your heating bill and saving money on fuel or electricity costs is to reduce the amount of heat that you actually need. There are several methods you could use to accomplish this. To start with, keep your house cooler than normal in the winter months. If you keep your house around 65 degrees, it will still be comfortable, but will not use as much heat - thus saving you money. Additionally, use small space heaters instead of heating up the entire house.

Step 2: Heat More Efficiently

Once you pay to create the heat, it is best to use it efficiently to heat as much as possible with as little cost as possible. If you use a furnace, have your furnace cleaned once per year to avoid build up. If you use baseboard heating, check to make sure that the baseboards are in good condition as well and that the water is flowing throughout the house.

Another way to reduce heating cost is to use all of the heat, including heat from showers and cooking in the oven. After using the oven, open the door a crack to let the hot air heat up the kitchen (assuming you don't have small children). The same thing can be done with the dishwasher heat and the hot air from showers and baths.

Step 3: Keep the Heat You Create

While this is the third step in the process, it is one of the most important ones for reducing your spending on your heating bill. After you have paid for the heat, you need to make sure that you keep it in your house (instead of heating up the outside, as your grandmother might say). To do this, check the house for drafts that could let hot air out and cold air in. Often, drafts occur around the doors and windows in a house. If you find a draft, but cannot afford to fix it immediately, stuff some towels around the area to prevent the air flow. Also, check the insulation on your roof or attic, since most hot air will try to escape through there as well.
