If you love word games, specifically Scrabble, but you don't always have someone to play with (at work, on a plane, etc.) now you can still keep your word skills sharp with Bobbage, a unique and fun Windows Mobile word game that takes its inspiration from Scrabble, Boggle and other word games.

Overview

Bobbage is a very simple to play touchscreen friendly Windows Mobile game that works in the exact same manner as Scrabble, only in one player mode. The game starts by providing users with a group of letters which must then be placed on the gameboard. Users then use the letters from the first word they create, along with their remaining letters to form new words.

While the game only allows one player to take part in the action at a time, users can take turns with the games multiplayer mode.

Overall Gameplay
Rating Good

Playing Bobbage is extremely simple. The game starts with a blank board and available letters underneath that board. Users simply choose one letter at a time and place those letters on the board in a vertical or horizontal manner.

Here's a look at the gameboard before any letters are laid down:

As you'll notice there is a timer at the top left hand side of the screen which is big enough to see, but not so large that it shrinks the gameboard size. The timer will countdown the time remaining and can be changed for various types of gameplay. For example in standard mode users can challenge themselves by setting the time anywhere from 15 seconds to 30 minutes, while frantic game mode starts you with 60 seconds and you receive more time for each word you create. Users can even play a "multi-game" setup in which they must complete as many boards as possible with the time given.

Here's a look at one word laid down:

Even the pieces look very much like scrabble! After the first work I could then for example lay down a word vertically:

As you'll notice each letter I used then disappeared from the "available letters" section at the bottom of the screen shown in grey.

I then add another word and a final word to that setup in order to complete the board:

After I beat a game I can even choose to replay the level if I'm in single player mode.

Much like Tildetech's other games the high score menu is advanced, basically I can see my high scores and the high scores of other users based on the settings i'm using. This high score setup means if I score high in a 60 second game and lower in a 10 minute game those scores will display only for those options, not as one list.

I also really liked that I could choose how many vowels appears on the board during gameplay if I wasn't happy with the number of vowels showing up in standard mode. If you really want to have fun with your friends give them 50 percent of each, they'll go crazy trying to figure out why your high scores are so much better than their own scores.

Finally the available word support is huge. According to Tildetech the program supports, "Six English dictionaries ranging from 58,000 (easy) to 210,000 words (hard), including a UK English dictionary."

Conclusion

Bobbage is a fun take on the classic game of Scrabble that can be played right from your Windows Mobile phone. The game is also reasonable priced (considering the unlimited number of letter combinations you can face) at $8.95. I started with the Tildetech demo and then ended up with a full copy on my own accord.

Give Bobbage a try today, if you're a word puzzler fan you'll be addicted in no time at all.
