If you love the word search game Boggle you're going to love Bobble, a Windows Mobile take on the popular word puzzler. With an interactive timer and scoring, plus multiplayer capabilities, this is the perfect game to occupy your children on long car trips and pass your own time during work breaks.

Bobble Overview

The premise of Bobble is simple, take a grib of either 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 or 6x6 letters and form as many words with those letters as you can before time runs out, making sure that the words are formed by letters that connect from one letter to the next.

Users can choose to play Bobble by themselves using the timer function and scoring sections to beat their own scores or they can play in two player mode with alternate turns taken by each player.

Bobble also offers support for six dictionaries including UK English for our friends across the pond. When all is said and done the program supports up to 210,000 words which should ensure any word you type is accepted.

Users even have several different types of games they can play, all of which offer their own challenges as you try to find words under different circumstances.

Overall Gameplay
Rating Good

The actual touch friendly gameplay screen is setup for very simple data entry and data viewing capabilities. I personally chose the 4 x 4 gameplay section to test the app. I first saw the left side word list which showed each word as I typed them, followed by a timer at the top of the screen, my current score for words created and finally the letter section with following word display below that screen.

Bobble-Main-Screen-Display

My favorite part of the display was the "number of words" option at the bottom of the screen, for example 98 words can be created using the letters displayed on the screen, sometimes this number was higher, other times it was lower.

Clicking on letters then highlighted the letter I was examing, for example if I clicked the letter B it would be immediately highlighted in green.

Next I was able to add to the first letter by using words that are connected to that first touched letter. For eample B can lead to R then E, followed by A and then K to form the word BREAK. Here is how that full word would then look on the program (arrows included).

The developer also provides three different type of gameplay modes:

  • Standard game - You set the time between 15 seconds and 30 minutes
  • Frantic game mode - Timer is set at 15 seconds and time increases as you find new words
  • Elimination game mode -- Find every word before time runs out in order to progress

TildeTech (the games developers) have also included an auto resume option in case you have to exit your game quickly to answer an important call or email.

The game was also smart enough to not only provide me with high scores, but actual scores based on the exact type of gameplay and preferences I was using. With this option something playing for 30 minutes wouldn't rank higher than me in the 5 minute timed games I played. This is a great option for seperating serious players from other users of the game.

Finally I picked up the game for $8.99 from TildeTech and they threw in a PC version of the game that was also provided by the developer.

Conclusion

Bobble is a very intuitive game that I highly recommend to Windows Mobile users who love the game of Boggle. Heck anyone looking to pass some time and brush up on their vocabulary will love this game if they give it a chance.

While $8.95 is a rather expensive price to pay for a mobile game, this game literally never runs out of new levels to play, making it well worth the price.

Whether you want to take on friends or attempt to beat your highscores for each type of game you've setup, this game is fun and challenging. Give it a try today, you won't be disappointed.
