Are you a fan of the old Atari and Arcade game QBert? If you are you'll love this Windows Mobile take on the classic video game.

Cool*Bert introduction - Understanding the Game of QBert

Qbert has been around for a long time and while the premise is very simple, actually beating levels can be quite the challenging.

Players will first notice on the left side of their screen a "change to" square, this is the color you must turn every other square on your board in order to advance to the next level. Simply move "Cool*Bert" to each square (by jumping on them) and the colors will change. Some squares will change colors automatically to the right colors, other squares you may have to jump to more than one time.

That's the basic, yet oddly addicting premise of the game. Now let's take a look at a few screenshots so we understand what's actually offered in this Windows Mobile version of the game.

Overall Gameplay
Rating Good

Cool*Bert stays true to the original game in terms of how it's played and the setup of the pyramid shaped board. The graphics are pretty basic (again keeping a true tone to the game) and Cool*Bert features the same goofy design of the original game.

You'll notice a few options on the screen, first at the top right there's an easy to see score output, while the bottom of the screen features the number of lives remaining (you get three lives) and the level you are playing, unfortunately there are only 4 levels. Just click on the direction you want to move "CoolBert" by using the controller option and he'll jump in that direction. Jump on one of the circular colored palettes and you'll be transported back to the top of the screen.

Sure that part of the game offers nothing new, but that's the point, Cool*Bert is basically an emulated version of the original game, ported over to Windows Mobile for touchscreen fun. You even have to avoid obstacles, such as the famous "red ball" found on the original game, a fact that adds to the difficulty of each level.

Conclusion

I love Cool*Bert, then again I was addicted to the old school arcade game back in the day and I could hardly ever be separated from my gaming systems and computer.

If you want to reminisce about the good old days of video games I would highly recommend you download this fun, yet goofy game. Heck it's only $.99 at Handango which is a relatively cheap game to play, even if there are only 4 levels of gameplay.

The controls are simple, the graphics are spot on from the original and overall it's a fun game to play if you loved the original.
