Ever ring someone’s doorbell or flat intercom buzzer and then make a quick escape? Ring'n'Run is a Windows Mobile simulation of that very entertaining past time.

Virtual Childhood

For children, lots of fun can be had by ringing someone’s doorbell and running away – it’s immature of course, but that's the point of being a child. What’s needed for adults is a virtual replacement, a simulation of the moment when you hide and look carefully around the corner to see a neighbour looking around for the culprit, knowing that they know it was you all along...

While we might be some distance from an app that brings all of that onto a Windows Phone, we can instead play with Ring'n'Run, an app that brings a virtual intercom buzzer to Windows Mobile complete with comedy voices and reactions.

Download and Installation Information

The installer file – downloadable via XDA-developers.com (free signup required) – is available for a range of screen sizes, with versions for VGA, QVGA, WVGA and WQVGA.

Ring'n'Run requires just Windows Mobile 5 or 6.x although the download file is a rather hefty 6.1 MB.

The CAB installer file should be downloaded to your PC or Windows Mobile phone in order to begin – if you opted to download to PC, you’ll need to copy it to your Windows Phone via the USB cable connection in order to begin the installation.

Using Ring'n'Run

There isn’t an awful lot that can be said for using Ring'n'Run. For a start, unless you’re scared of your Windows Phone, there’s no running. Similarly, while the reactions of the voices built in to the app are amusing, they soon become repetitive.

In terms of personalization, the only option is to apply your own label to one of the buzzers. This is pretty disappointing really – it would be much more interesting for such an otherwise limited app if it were possible to record your own responses.

Polished but Limited
Rating Below Average

I really wanted Ring'n'Run to surprise me with a secret added function, hidden game or some other clever element that I’d otherwise missed. However it was not to be.

Rather than a game, Ring'n'Run is no more than a very well designed and executed novelty app. There is little that makes it “sticky” – nothing to make you go back for more after the initial play around and this where I feel the developer has missed a trick with not allowing custom voices to be added.

Until such customization is added, (the existing opportunity to label a single buzzer seems like a bit of an afterthought) there is little to recommend Ring'n'Run.
