Yet another Windows Mobile Twitter client attempting to somehow wrong the rights of those that went before. Given that PockeTwit and Twikini are pretty much perfect, what chance does PocketTweet have?

Introduction

PocketTweet is another in a long line of Windows Mobile Twitter clients that hope to be able to realistically balance the day to day usage of many hardcore Tweeters with a suitable and effective interface on their WinMo handset.

Available free from FreewarePocketPC.net, PocketTweet has at least got a great name, telling exactly what it does.

Sadly it’s catchy name is a bit too similar to that of PockeTwit, and the PocketTweet disaster story doesn’t end there...

How to Install

Using the traditional ActiveSync-managed .EXE installer via Windows, PocketTweet requires that your Windows Mobile device is connected to your PC in order for installation to be completed.

As the file is just 28 KB this shouldn’t take too long, and once complete you’ll be able to sign in to PocketTweet and start Twittering.

Requiring Windows Mobile 2003 or later, PocketTweet will not run without Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 or greater.

It does have the benefit of being a nice, light installation however, due to its small size and lack of any Web 2.0 style interface pretensions.

Tweeting with PocketTweet

PocketTweet basic layoutSadly however, the interface is nothing short of offensive to the eye. No one would seriously wander around in public, sit in a cafe or railway carriage and send Tweets via this horrific user interfac, unless they were perhaps using an old HP Pocket PC device.

PocketTweet almost smells of Windows CE and using the application unfortunately doesn't improve on the feeling that the application is a bit "old hat".

Given that vital Twitter elements such as direct reply and standard replies are missing from this very limited application, PocketTweet just isn’t ready for general use in its current state.

Barrel ScraperRating Poor

The developer reports plans to resolve these omissions as well as provide a skinnable interface and TwitPic.com support – but it’s all a bit “been there bought the T-shirt”.

Twikini and PockeTwit do it all so much better than PocketTweet has any chance of doing, and there’s absolutely no way I can recommend this app even for the sake of just “having a look”. It’s poor, flaky and doesn’t always install.

There are some brilliant Twitter clients for Windows Mobile available free – and there are some poor ones. PocketTweet scrapes the bottom of the barrel - stay well away.
