Viigo is one of the best RSS feed readers available for Windows Mobile, capable of managing news, blogs and podcast content. This article shows you how to set it up.

What is Viigo?

Viigo is a superb Windows Mobile application providing up-to-the-minute access to the RSS feeds of your choice. Comprising a client side installation on your Windows Mobile device and optional user account at the software’s homepage, Viigo offers a slick, untethered access to breaking news, social networking, podcasts, UPS tracking, weather checks, flight itineraries and more.

What’s more, Viigo has recently been enhanced. It’s now more than jut an RSS reader, and this Beta version of the software is still free and available for download!

Installation

Installation of Viigo is simple and straightforward – as well as flexible. From the Viigo website, you can request either an email or text message on to pickup with your Windows Mobile handheld, download directly to your phone or download to your desktop and install via Microsoft Activesync. I recommend downloading the version that ships with the latest version of the .Net CF framework to save time – if you already have it installed, then the installer will simply skip that step.

It is most useful to link your installation with an account to allow for desktop browser configuration of your RSS feeds. This requires a quick and simple signup at www.myviigo.com.

Setup and Configuration

Once you have downloaded and installed Viigo, you then need to launch and sign in to the application on your Windows Mobile device. The first thing you’ll see once you’ve passed the log in screen is the main interface, from where you can view your own selection of News & RSS feeds, suggested Sports and Entertainment feeds, get local information and Stocks & Finance information, as well as manage the downloading of podcasts.

The simplest way to manage lots of RSS feeds is as mentioned above via the web interface. Local weather can easily be selected and displayed via the Weather screen by entering the location you want to view weather reports for, up to seven days time.

Flight Checker

Another cool feature is the flight itinerary checker, which allows the checking of flight schedules all across the USA, Canada and Europe. It’s a simple case of entering the flight code, and checking the realtime update – all from your Windows Mobile phone!

I can’t relate enough how impressed I am with this version of Viigo. While it may only be a Beta version, it is remarkably stable compared to the previous release, and I’ve barely stopped using it since installation!

Other Windows Mobile RSS feed readers need to sit up and take notice - Viigo has raised the bar, and everything that comes after needs to meet these same functionality and design requirements.
