Windows Mobile offers great connectivity by allowing you to browse the World Wide Web on your Pocket PC. You can also send and receive e-mails on your device, but in order to do so you need to set up an e-mail account first. This step-by-step guide explains how to do this in an easy way.

Overview

Windows Mobile has made things a lot easier for people who constantly want to stay in touch with clients or family by using primary communication features like e-mail, messaging etc. It is just like carrying a personal computer, the only difference being that it is compact enough to fit in your pockets. You can synchronize your Windows Mobile Pocket PC with a desktop PC that is connected to the Internet or connect to a Wi-Fi router to browse the World Wide Web.

While it is very easy to send or receive an e-mail on your Windows Mobile Pocket PC you first need to set up an e-mail account on your device. The configuration process might be a little complicated for beginners but you can do it easily by following this guide.

Follow this Easy Guide

The Home-screen or Today-screen on a Pocket PC is similar to the desktop screen that we witness on a Windows PC with a ‘Start’ button from where you can start browsing the phones applications. To set up an e-mail account, tap on the ‘Start’ button and open the ‘Messaging’ folder. Here you will see a list of options and selecting the ‘New E-Mail Account’ option will guide you to an e-mail setup screen where you can configure your new e-mail account.

On the e-mail setup screen you will be asked to enter an e-mail address that you want to use on your Pocket PC. If you have already established an Internet connection on your Pocket PC you can click on the checkbox that says ‘try to get e-mail settings automatically from the Internet’ followed by tapping the ‘Next’ button to let the Auto Setup get these settings for you. This usually takes 30 seconds but there is a great possibility that settings are not found and you have to manually configure the setup by tapping on the ‘Next’ button. This will lead you to the next window where you can select whether you want to set up an Internet E-mail or an Exchange Server.

Select ‘Internet E-mail’ from the drop-down box and tap on ‘Next’ to provide an ‘Account Display Name’ that will be displayed while sending or receiving e-mails. Tapping on ‘Next’ will lead you to the next window where you can add the address of ‘Incoming Mail Server’ and the type of server you are using. I selected POP3 from the drop-down menu and tapped on the ‘Next’ button to go to the next settings window where I was able to provide a user name and my e-mail account password. Clicking on the ‘save password’ checkbox will make sure your password is saved so that you don't have to enter it every time you want to access your e-mail.

The next window allows you define the Outgoing (SMTP) mail server you want to use. Clicking on the checkbox at the bottom of the screen will allow you to use the same user name and password that you have defined in the previous step. Tapping on the ‘Next’ button again will complete the setup and you can tap on the ‘Finish’ button to save your settings. Now your settings have been configured and you can send and receive e-mails on your Pocket PC.

Quick Note: You can find the SMTP and POP3 information for your email accounts from your email provider and very often in the options or help menus found when logged into your email accounts.
