Here is a simple guide on how to recover lost or deleted data like messages, contacts, call logs, images etc. on the SIM card of your Windows Mobile phone. It can be done by using SIMcon, a forensic tool used by detectives all over the world for restoration of data on SIM cards.

What is SIMcon and how does it work?

Recently, my Windows Mobile Smartphone was affected by a virus, corrupting its SIM card that stored all my important contacts. It created a lot of panic for me and while searching for an effective solution I found a useful windows-based tool called SIMcon. It comes in quite handy while allowing you to securely create an image file of the content stored (even deleted data) on your GSM SIM card. Then you can copy these files on your computer or on any other storage card.

This application comes with a forensic USB SIM card reader that will read the content of your SIM card by using your desktop PC. You can start by installing the application on your PC and then connecting this SIM card reader to it via a USB port. When the connection is established, you just had to remove the SIM card from your phone and insert it into the card reader.

Now you can launch SIMcon on your PC and follow some simple steps to allow the application to access all the data on your card. But the question is, can the deleted data that you have accidentally removed from your card be recovered back? Well, SIMcon also allows you to recover deleted contacts, log files, text messages etc. quite easily. The screenshot below shows how the deleted text messages look while accessing them on SIMcon.

Accessing Deleted Messages

If you look closely on the left-hand side list view, you will find archive to messages, contacts, logs and much more. The text messages can then be copied on any text reader application or even printed by using a simple copy-paste method. Not only this, you can even trace back your deleted contacts or log files or last dialed number by using this application. It also allows you to trace back the location where your mobile phone was last used.

The application was able to recorver ALL of my missing information and it did so with a simple point and click interface that's so intuitive there was no need for an instruction manual or even on screen directions for that matter. Overall a great application that I recommend to my readers if they need to restore their missing data.
