SpeedDial Plus is supposed to make things much easier for your by allowing you to assign unlimited number button combinations on your Symbian device keyboard so that you can perform various actions or open applications faster. With this application you don't have to open your main menu and browse through various menus and options every time you want to access an application. Now you just have to press the number combination assigned to the specific action and the application will immediately operate. The program allows you to open contacts, send a message, change phone settings, change Bluetooth status and much more.
SpeedDial Plus is developed by Symbian Guru (same developer who gave us BT-Guard, CuteKeys and AfterCall) and can be bought from their website for $9.99. The developers also provide a fully functional 10-days trial version that can be downloaded by going to the description page of this application.
The program is compatible with all Smartphones operating on Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition platforms and readers are advised to check their device compatibility before buying the paid version. I easily installed application on my device by using Nokia PC Suite.
Once the installation process was finished, I opened the app by going to my phone's Main Menu → Applications → SpeedDial Plus which further guided me to a screen where I was asked whether I wanted to enable the auto-start option to automatically start the application upon a soft-reset.
After enabling this option I was guided to its main screen that initially displayed ‘no data’ text. I was able to add a new number combination by pressing the left soft key to access the options menu and then selecting ‘New’ from here.
I was then guided me to a new screen where I could assign a new number combination by selecting the ‘Short number’ option. Here I could also select the type of app from options like shortcut to an application, shortcut for an entry from contact database, shortcut to a document, shortcut for an Internet website and much more. Then I pressed on the ‘Application’ option to select the application on my device that I wanted to assign to this number combination. The ‘Display name’ option allowed me to enter a unique name to this newly created number combination.
After I had created a new number combination, I navigated back to the main screen where I could see this entry in a list. All the created number combinations are displayed on this list and you can edit or delete any entry by pressing the options menu that also displays other options like register, buy, settings, help, about and exit.
The settings menu contains two options that are ‘Activate’ and ‘Auto-restart’ that allow you to activate the app and enable the auto-restart option respectively. Now I could easily open any app or perform a specific action by pressing the assigned number combination on my device.
There is no doubt that SpeedDial Plus is the most convenient way to open applications or perform various actions on your Symbian Smartphone but the question is how many number combinations can you remember at a time?
The app worked exactly as advertised by the developers and I could assign number combinations quite easily but I could not remember all these combinations and most of the time I ended up opening the wrong apps.
The app though does come in handy if you are going to use it to assign 10 to 15 commands that you can remember, but after that its usability is totally dependent on what sort of memory you have.
I recommend that my readers download and test the trial version and see for themselves if this app will help them more quickly navigate their own Symbian based smartphones.
