Vringo is a Symbian application that allows you to use video ringtones instead of the default ringtone style that is typically used. Vringo a social networking site geared towards the creation and sharing of video ringtones and is currently in beta form.

To test this application, I used Vringo beta version 2.0 on a Nokia E71 which is an S60 3rd generation device.

Installation
Rating Excellent

You have to get a beta version from Vringo which is not yet public. If you are able to get a beta version you can install the SIS file using the Nokia installer.

While the application is installing you will be asked to login with your mobile number and to create a password. These login credentials will also allow you to login to the website. Though they suggest the installation will take roughly two minutes, it takes longer than that.

On Vringo’s website http://vringo.com, there are a number of categories with different video ringtones. You are also able to upload videos you record with your device and make them available as ringtones on the website if you desire. Any ringtones you like can be added to your favorites, which in this case are called “My VringTones.” When you synchronize the next time they will automatically be copied to the mobile device.

You are also able to invite contacts to view and/or use your VringTones and also to share theirs with you.

When you set up the application for the first time it will retrieve any video ringtones you have in your VringTones online. Manual or automatic syncing is possible.

On the Vringo website, you also have an option to create custom video ringtones using their studio option. It is quite an easy process that only takes three steps.

Search for videos on the internet

Modify the video into a ringtone

Send to your mobile device

The length of a video can only be up to 30 seconds long; this is to assure it can be downloaded quickly and not take up large amounts of storage space. A link to download the video is messaged to you in order to allow for an easy download by telling you to sync your device. In my opinion, Vringo has created a perfect system of creating video ringtones and then sending them to your mobile device. It is very simple and easy to use.

Handling
Rating Excellent

Vringo is very easy to use both on the device and on the website. You need to make sure you use Wi-Fi while using the application on your phone due to the application being very intensive when it comes to the amount of data that is sent and received.

Weaknesses
Rating Average

It can take quite a long time to load the application, especially when you reboot your device. The reason for this could be due to automatically finding a wireless access point.

Only ¾ of the mobile devices' display is covered by the video ringtone. If it covered the full display it would look more elegant and also create more eye candy.

You should be able to set ringtones for different profiles. And you should also be able to set specific ringtones for a contact in a manner similar to S60’s assigning of ringtones.

Conclusion
Rating Average

Vringo and the videos on the website are free of charge and the application is worth having a look at. However, some oversights in the design mean I have to give it a rating of 3 out of 5.
