My Assistant is a set of useful Symbian tools that are integrated in a single app to boost your productivity. The app includes a call conversation recorder, voice notes recorder, keypad locker and an alarm clock utility and can be accessed quickly whenever needed.

Overview

My Assistant app lets you record phone conversation while making or receiving a call and can also be used as a voice recorder to quickly record up to six hours of voice notes. The program also includes an automatic keypad locker that automatically locks your phones keypad after a defined period, preventing accidental pressing of phone keys. It even includes a handy alarm utility that allows you to set an alarm that can be repeated once or daily so that you don't have to set it again and again. You even can assign hardware keys for all these tools so that these can be accessed anytime by pressing a single key.

The program also includes an auto-restart option that can be enabled if you want to automatically start the app and keep running it in the background after having a soft-reset. My Assistant is developed by Tektronic and can be purchased from their website for $12.99. The developers also provide a trial version that can be downloaded from the programs description webpage.

The program is compatible with all Smartphones operating on Symbian S60 2nd edition platform, including popular models like Nokia N70, N72, 6600 etc.

Examining My Assistant App

Main Screen

Since there is no .EXE setup file available, I downloaded the .SIS file on my desktop PC and then copied and ran it on my device to install the app. The app can be started by going to your phone’s Main Menu → Applications → My Assistant which will direct you to its main screen displaying a list of all the included utilities along with a settings menu.

Auto Keylock Settings

Initially, I opened the auto-keylock settings menu to enable this feature and selected ‘always’ option to use this feature all the time. Then I defined a keylock Timeout that is the time in seconds after which I wanted the keyboard to be automatically locked when the device was not in use.

Then I came back to the main menu and selected the Clock Alarm feature and activated it. Further I defined the time when I wanted this alarm to go off. The ‘Repeat Alarm → Once’ option allowed me to set this alarm in a way that it will be repeated next day also at the same time. Similarly, selecting the ‘Repeat Alarm → Daily’ option made the alarm to go off everyday at that same time defined until it is disabled in the settings menu.

Recorder Settings

Then I again navigated back to the main menu to open recorder service settings.

The recorder service can be enabled or disabled anytime by selecting the respective option from its settings menu. Then I opened the ‘Record call’ option to set the recording options, these options are: Never Records, Always Records and Ask before Record. The ‘Record start hotkey’ option allowed me to assign a hotkey for the recorder service so that the recorder was automatically initialized on pressing that key. Here, I could also define the ‘Hotkey Timeout’ that is the time delay after which I wanted to start or stop the recording process when the hotkey was pressed.

The ‘Record maximum’ option allows you to set a maximum recording time so that even longer conversations can be saved. The app allows you to save these recorded files either in your phone memory or storage card memory where these voice files are saved in AMR format. While recording a conversation you will notice a blinking red icon on the upper right corner of the main screen indicating that recording is in progress. The auto-start feature can be enabled anytime by going to the main settings menu. This feature allows you to automatically start the application and keeps running it in the background whenever you have a soft reset on your device.

The main setting menu also includes other options like ‘Bring to front’ and ‘Bring to front hotkey’ that can be configured to bring the application to the foreground from background mode and to assign a hotkey for initializing this feature. While the application is running in foreground mode, the ‘Show status icons’ option can be configured to display a small icon on the upper right corner of the screen indicating that the application is running.

Final Verdict

The best-selling point of the My Assistant app is a combination of all the useful tools that can be accessed quickly from the same platform. The user interface is quite uncomplicated as all the features and settings are neatly placed, never mixing or interfering with each other.

The auto-restart option is also an additional benefit, allowing you to automatically restart the application whenever you have a soft reset. The app works exactly in the same way as advertised by the developers on their website.

Also, I think that the application is quite reasonably priced at $12.99, giving buyers access to all the features that otherwise are quite expensive if purchased separately.

I will give this application 9 out of 10 points for its usability, simple and uncomplicated user interface, loads of features, functionality and price. Overall it is a nice set of utilities available at a decent price.
