iPhone Bluetooth Headphone Hacks

Even though the iPhone doesn't work natively with bluetooth, we here at Bright Hub have done the hard work so you don't have to. Read on to find out how to work that bluetooth into an audio receiver on-the-go.

Listen To Your Favorite Tunes On Your Bluetooth

You've just bought or been gifted a brand new headset (or headphones) that is bluetooth-enabled. You already know that your iPhone can wirelessly relay calls to the bluetooth while you're on the go, but did you know that you can listen to your favorite tunes on that same bluetooth? It isn't easy, but after five or six tries, you'll be surprised how second-nature the procedure becomes.

It seems incredible to think that Apple wouldn't include something as simple as a "change audio source" button for the music section of the cell phone, but sure enough they didn't. And while you're waiting for a complete bluetooth compatibility upgrade, you can at least try out our method.

There is one small caveat however. Because the bluetooth compatibility currently on the iPhone as a whole only supports headsets, mono sound is the only available sound that can be transmitted. Therefore, forget about using your fancy stereo bluetooth headphones for the iPhone, you're better off investing in a different music player.

All that being said, let's get to the steps.

The Hack

1. Click on the phone icon on the iPhone

2. Go to the keypad and type in the following command precisely as written: *#307#

3. Once the incoming call screen comes up, click the "answer call" button on the bluetooth, then the answer button on the iPhone

4. Now, hit the home button and get back to the home screen

5. Click on the phone icon again, get back to the keypad and type in 0

6. Answer the phone by clicking on the iPhone's answer button and this time, make sure to click on the "sources" button and click on your bluetooth

7. Now head back to the home screen and start listening to whatever you want - either iPod tunes or any other apps

During this time, you won't be able to use cellular connections or any kind of outside connections to the internet. In order to restore your connections, you'll have to reboot the iPhone once you've heard everything you wanted to.

This method is a little convoluted to say the least, but at least you won't be losing a vital function of your phone. The ability to listen to your music wirelessly via your bluetooth headphone is something that is priceless - and even though the sound will be mono, until Apple decides to unleash upon the world a firmware update that takes care of this issue once and for all, you'll at least be able to use it.

Still Works and Necessary on 2G iPhone
This Still Works on AT&T as of March 2010
and is Necessary on 2G iPhones running 3.01
My Plantronics 'phone-mono' headset only supports HSP and HFP profifes, not A2DP
Of course Apple should at least support mono
music over Bluetooth on 2G phones.

I'm Glad this is here you dufuses who are condemning the author...
My bluetooth does not support A2DP and so I'm going to test to see if this works as a hack that makes it unnecessary (i.e. you're listening through the phone line). It might not work, but I'm going to try it--so thanks to the author for keeping this around. =]

...and bleh to you losers who didn't realize this was an old article. Lol!

RE: iPhone Bluetooth Headphone Hacks
To all who keep saying to fix this article, this is a pre-3.0 bluetooth work-around that's no longer necessary. The article is maintained on the site simply for those who might still be running pre-3.0 firmware. It was published in 2008.

There's no fact-checking to be done, 3.0 enables bluetooth, but for all those who want to see how it was done before, this article exists.

Wake up
This may have been a good hack in the past, but why publish this a few months after apple added native support for bluetooth headphones?

Please know your facts before posting hacks to fix problems that don't exist anymore.

Wrong information!
"There is one small caveat however. Because the bluetooth compatibility currently on the iPhone as a whole only supports headsets, mono sound is the only available sound that can be transmitted. Therefore, forget about using your fancy stereo bluetooth headphones for the iPhone, you're better off investing in a different music player."

This is wrong info! Stereo Bluetooth has been available on the iPhone since July 2009. Please update.

laurnzo is WRONG
iPhone firmware 3.0 only allows bluetooth for the 3g and 3gs phones. For those with the original iphone, there is not stereo bluetooth support.

Bluetooth options
why do you have to go through all this when iphone firmware 3.0 allows bluetooth stereo. I have a motorola S9-HD hooked up with my iphone 3G and it works great, i can listen to music play games and when a call comes in it mutes the music or the game sound just like the cable headsets does. ALL you have to do is enable bluetooth just like you do with your bluetooth earphone and it work. Maybe i'm confused and you are talking about something else
