Tips and Tricks for Improving Battery Life of the HTC Hero

Smartphones these days offer a ton of functionality, unfortunately those functions often come with a big drawback, they drain most phone batteries at very quick rates. The HTC Hero is no exception to the battery drain problem, luckily it's a fairly easy fix if several tips are followed.

Get More from That Battery

You should be able to squeeze a bit more life out of your HTC Hero battery but unfortunately most of these tips will reduce the functionality.

1. Disable the "Always On" Data Option - Instead of having your phone always searching for updates you can just switch the data on when you need it. From your home screen hit Menu > Mobile network and then turn it off. This will single handedly be the biggest energy saver, since your phone is no longer constantly searching for information.

2. Disable Wireless Network Positioning Services - From your home screen hit Menu > Settings > Location and finally uncheck Use wireless networks. Please note you don't need to turn off the GPS checkbox since GPS only operates in conjunction with the GPS apps that access it.

3. Turn Off Wi-Fi - This one's quick, just select Menu > Settings > Wireless Controls and then uncheck Wi-Fi.

4. Turn Off the Weather Widget - This is a function that constantly pulls in data, which in turn drains battery life. Turn this function off by doing the following: Menu > All Programs > Weather then choose the Menu option from within the Weather program and choose Setting where you can disable Update Automatically. Now you can just pull Weather information in when you want it, not constantly.

5. Set Your Other Constant Update Apps to Lower Update Frequencies - There's really no menu to navigate here, it depends on the applications you're using. For example you could set the Facebook app to only update once an hour rather than every 5 minutes. The main point is simple, you want to use the least amount of data possible to help reduce battery strain. The best option is to set all of them to manually update only when you ask.

6. Use the Task Panel and Shut Down Apps - Sure the HTC Hero can run 10 apps at one time without many issues, but every application that remains open is using processing power, which in turn is draining your device's battery. Exit applications you're not using to save battery life. You can see what is running from your home screen by hitting Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and then tap the Running tab at the top. If you see anything that shouldn't be running then tap on it and select Force stop. Be careful here though, some apps will just restart themselves anyway but it's best to pick on games or apps that you know don't need to be running.

7. Turn Down Screen Brightness - From the Hero Launcher click on Screen & Lock > Screen > Brightness. You can drag the brightness down slightly to save on battery life. This is really a personal preference option, if you don't like a super bright screen then you'll want to turn it down because the factory settings tend to offer a blaring brightness.

Do You Have More Tips?

Remember that for the Wi-Fi and data connection settings you can always add a widget to one of your home screens so you turn them on and off quickly without having to enter the menus. To do this hit the + sign at the bottom right on your home screen and select Widgets. Choose the ones you want and then press and hold on it to position it where you want it on the screen.

Those are some basic battery saving tips for the HTC Hero. The basic idea is simple, the less strain you put on your device's processor, the better your battery life will be. Reducing the time that your screen stays on when idle and the brightness at which it operates will also play a role in battery life times.

These are, of course, just a few tips to get started. Feel free to leave a comment with your own tips or ideas for extending the battery life on the HTC Hero.

Advanced Task Killer Free is a good app for killing what's running
Advanced Task Killer Free is really cool for shutting down apps - it predicts/intuits what you want to shut down when you open it, including killing itself when you hit the kill button. You can unselect and select programs too. It seems to remember that (e.g., if you unselect Pandora because you are using it, the next time you enter Advanced Task Killer Free, it has unchecked Pandora).

I tried a few of these apps and this one seems the best so far.

And thank you for the great advice here - I was a bit disappointed with the battery life at first - now it is really excellent given how much I surf while out and about.

@Morten FC
look for a program called 'tasker' in the market. it's an incredibly powerful scripting tool that supports toggle widgets (amongst other things) and can be used to set 'power' profiles that can be easily switched on/off. it acn also do a lot of 'timed' things, such as set your phone to airplane mode overnight, but reconnect every 30mins to grab SMS etc. i've already used it to create a battery-level-display widget, sound / conectivity profiles, a 3-shot camera widget and more...

RE: Tips and Tricks for Improving Battery Life of the HTC Hero
I've noticed that turning off ALWAYS ON does nothing for me I have to fully turn off the Mobile Network to see any improvement. But the improvement is ridiculous. I'll be down to 84% battery life in under an our with Mobile Network on. With it off I'll be at 96% the lowest in one hour. It's unbelievable.

its odd
it seems like my phones acting a bit different than everyone else's when i installed handcent it drained my battery quite quickly than the typical stock messaging app, then i tried chompsms , yes it gave me a bit more battery life than handcent but nowhere near as much as the stock messaging app. ive looked at my awake time and its typically around 24% yet my battery dies quiet quickly and it gives me the typical 8 hours which is odd bc through out threads ive read that these tips would increase battery life but it seems to me that yes they help quite a bit but i can not get the hours everyone seems to b getting i have exchanged my phone 3 times already for the same one and well i still get the same amount of hours.... all i do is text and use the dictionary when needed. i dont use the browser much and i dont listen or play games on my phone...any helps or tips?

They work extremely well. I bought the 1550mAh and it gives me about 32 hours of use. Thats with an hour of music, and hour of games and about 10mins of 3G browsing a day, Data sync switched on.

advance task killer
I tried all of the other tips listed above , and some helped a little. But none of them helped, as significantly as This one. Def noticed the difference. It's just like task manager on your computer. Dwnld it from Market, for free. You can turn programs off (usually without even knowing they were running) Try this one!

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I love this phone and this was really helpful. I love the new SMS feature - handcent and the appkiller is sooo useful as I don't always close my apps down.

fix for battery drain
I have solved the issue no my phone. After much searching and reading and app searching I think I got it! first disable all the notifications for the built in mail and text message apps. Then go to the market (on your phone :) ) and install roadsync (if you want exchange), the trial is for 14 days and then it is 9.95 ish. If you do not need exchange just install k-9 mail. For SMS messaging install HandCent. Its prettier and it does not prevent the phone from sleeping. My awake time was at 80% with these changes it is now running at 33%. My battery is lasting and I'm getting all messages and email. Best of all Roadsync is push email so you get the mail when it is sent to you. Hope that all makes sense and helps some people out cause this is a great phone and OS.

Gmail download frequency
How can I change the download frequency of my gmail account? i can not find in setting an option for this.

I have taskkiller, do you recommend to have the Autokill on?

SMSing
not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but the default Messaging App has a weird thing that keeps the phone from sleeping proper. i found that by downloading an alternative app (i used Handcent SMS - its free) my battery life extended tremendously.

Save battery life!
ohh, thans man. really nice tips. with all this things off and my phone will have about 3 days work without charging. Makes me really happy :D
Tara Jan 11, 2010 12:17 PM
Thank you!!
I did almost everything in the above article as well as downloading Task Killer (thanks Renee) and my battery life has improved tremendously. Before it would not keep a charge for a full day even if I barely used it, but now I use it throughout the day and it's fine. Battery life was the only issue I had with this phone and now that is much better so I am 100% satisfied with the HTC Hero. Although I have noticed when closing my apps with Task Killer that programs are open that I never opened like Navigation. Can't quite figure that one out.

hi ,
just wanted to know how can i view png images on HTC hero
Jason Grant Jan 5, 2010 6:39 AM
General response.
I have tried the above, turning off some of the background apps. and have found that the phone tends to work quicker, for example before the screen would hesitate slightly before moving pages or compose a SMS, or a multitude of things, but removing some of the non required at present background apps running does indeed help my processer speed up. So although it may not save battery (or probably does in my opinion) it most certainly helps free up the processor load, and thus making it work more efficiently.

saving battery life
download advance task killer off the market. it's free. you can click on it and easily view which apps you have currently open and can select which ones you want to close. takes seconds. saves battery in a big way. that way you dont have to worry about changing this setting, turning that off, etc. just get advance task killer.

Great tips!
Thanks for the tips. I love my Hero but I'm charging it at least once a day because of the battery drain. Good to know I can turn these non-essential apps off. It makes sense really that the weather app should only update when I use it.

Thanks again!

Measuring
I just wondered if you have tested the battery drain with & without these options selected?

The data-always on function seems like something that would not drain unless it was being used by applications. Same with the network location.

Plus screen brightness is automatically controlled on the Hero depending on environmental brightness, and altering it manually removes this functionality.

The weather app, as far as I can see, only updates when you switch over to it - unless I am mistaken.

Unless these things dramatically reduce battery drain, I would prefer to have a quicker response time & leave them on - to me, the settings and the way the system works seems sensibly configured towards preserving battery life.

preserve battery app
I would love to have a 'preserve battery widget' that could switch all these settings on and off, when I need to save battery power

Battery Drain
Does having the bookmark view with multiple web pages listed drain the battery?

In Response To Peter
Peter, first thanks for your comments. However, I think you were looking at the TIPS with a lopsided view.

I wasn't suggesting you turn off all the functions on your device and never use them. I was suggesting that those were ways you can save on battery life.

For example if you're in a 3 hour meeting where you can't use WiFi then you should turn it off. I for one don't use the weather app very often so I don't have it turned on. The same goes for Screen brightness, I find turning it down slightly is actually "Easier" on my eyes, just a personal preference.

Also, you can get "Home screen Toggle Switch" applications for free that give one button on/off access from your homescreen for most functions so it's less of an inconvenience to turn them on/off depending on use.

One example of a toggle switch for WiFi

http://www.brighthub.com/mobile/google-android/reviews/48644.aspx

CurveFish makes many other toggle switches that help with my tips above as well.

Thanks!

James

Why use the Hero at all?
Hi James,

to be honest - if I turn off all mentioned functions... why the hack should I buy a Hero (androidbased mobile) at all? That is what makes it cool - being connected, having all those little infos and the widgets in place, directly with no hazzling in setting sections, menues etc. and waiting for a service to start.

In response to Brent
Sorry Brent, I also oversee Palm Pre articles and typed "Palm Pre" in the conclusion by accident. You are correct it should have said "Hero" I have corrected it :)
Brent Johnson Aug 29, 2009 5:09 PM
Hero, or Palm Pre?
Was the a hijacked post?
Does it refer to the Hero or Palm Pre?
I have neither, I have a G1 ... just looking at tips.
This was a glaring oversite.
