Ziplorer is an explorer and file compression tool for Blackberry Smartphones that allows you to explore and open zipped files. This article explains its inner workings and main features.

Overview

The markets are flooded with advanced mobile phone storage cards that can store huge amounts of data, but many users are always short of memory and can still use a little extra storage space when needed. Ziplorer is yet another tool for Blackberry Smartphones that lets you explore, compress and decompress .gz and .zip file formats. This program not only increases the storage capacity of your device but also allows you to save precious time by speeding up synchronization processes and by sending and opening compressed attachments with your messages.

Ziplorer is developed by S4BB and can be purchased from MobileSoftMarket for $14.97. The developers do not provide any trial version.

This program is compatible with all Smartphones based on Blackberry operating system 4.2 or higher. After connecting my device to a desktop computer, I downloaded the trial version setup file and used Blackberry Desktop Manager’s Application Loader to install the app on my Smartphone.

Examining Ziplorer App

After finishing the installation process, I opened the app by going to my phone’s main menu and then selecting the Ziplorer icon which further directed me to its main screen where I could explore files and folders stored on my device. The main application menu displays all the available options and I could open any directory by pressing the ‘enter dir’ button.

Main Options

kZip in Progress

The ‘go up’ button then allowed me to move to the previously opened directory and selecting ‘kZip’ button allowed me to pack the contents of the selected directory to a (k)zip achieve. Similarly, pressing the ‘gZip’ button allowed me to add the contents of the selected folder to a (g)zip file.

Unzipping Files

I could also unpack or extract any zipped or compressed folder by pressing the ‘unzip’ button and the ‘file info’ button displayed the properties of the currently selected file or folder. I could also delete any file or folder by simply selecting that entry and then pressing the ‘delete’ button from the options menu.

If you're tired of selecting only one file at a time and want to speed up the procedure, you can use the ‘select all’ button to select multiple files at a time. Similarly, you can use the ‘deselect’ option to unselect these entries. All the files and folders in the list are represented by different icons so that you can easily recognize any entry.

Finally, the orange icon represents a folder whereas a kZip archive is represented by a red icon. The gZip file is represented by a sky blue icon and an unknown or unidentified file or folder is represented by a white folder.

Final Verdict

Ziplorer is an easy to use and convenient explorer and file compression tool for Blackberry Smartphones and comes in quite handy while sending and opening compressed files via e-mails.

But RIM has already included a file compression app in its latest operating system version which is equally effective while opening zipped archives. So it hardly makes any sense to waste approximately $20.00 and I would rather update my Blackberry operating system to access the latest zip software.

Since no trial was available, I would recommend my readers stay away from this app.
