Helicopter is a very simple game to figure out, because the point is simple, just move the Helicopter in an up and down pattern while avoiding the ceiling, floors and any obstacles in between. The graphics are simple yet functional and the game offers decent scoring practices and as a change of pace "levels" which were not avialable in the original.
Here's some more information and screenshots from the Blackberry Helicopter game.
When first starting the game I was impressed with the nice graphics on the homescreen menu. From this section I could start a new game, resume a game I had to exit at an earlier time and even use the setup menu to choose the color of my helicopter and gameboard and the scores I've achieved over time.
Before starting the game I used the options menu to choose the level of gameplay: easy, medium and hard, along with the color you want to use for your level and helicopter. Really the color option is more for personalizing the game than actually playing it, but it's still a nice function.
Once I changed the settings it was simple to jump into the game, each level offers its own level of difficulty, which basically means that more obstacles will appear and more parts of each level will be skinnier at certain areas so you need to have better controller over the helicopter.
The game as I mentioned differs from the original in the sense that you can not only save your games (you can't do this on the PC/Online version), you can also complete actual levels rather than just going on forever until you die. Simply cross the "checkered flag" area and you get to move on to harder levels.
To defeat levels you need to fly the helicopter around obstancles. Simply press your finger and hold down on your screen to move your helicopter up and let go of the screen to move it down. The controls couldn't be any easier, although it took me 3 games to really feel comfortable with the controls. My main difficulty was determining how quickly the helicopter would move when I was touching or not touching the screen.
Finally the game offers a high score screen which includes seperate scores for the Easy, Medium and Hard levels of gameplay. Users simply enter in their name when they make the top 10 list and their scores display, it couldn't be any easier. The score screen even offers a nice graphical interface with fonts that are simple to read.
The Helicopter application for Blackberry touchscreen based devices is a fun take on the original PC/Online game that I rather enjoyed.
I loved the new "level" option and the ability to change level screen colors and use the Blackberry Storm's touchscreen based hardward.
Overall a great option for anyone looking to pass some time in between breaks in their busy days.
The game is available for $2.99 via the Blackberry App World and I suggest you download it if you like the original game or if you just want to pass some time.
