Let me first say that it irks me when a free online program is bundled into a mobile application and then sold for a profit. With that being said ProTranslateLite v1.0 is a free application that can be downloaded directly from the Mobihand website. Once installed the applications interface is extremely user friendly thanks to linked menus with names that spell out quite plainly what they do.
After the installation process was complete I launched ProTranslate and was pleased to realize that the program immediately prompted me to enter my text message as well as offering drop down menus for my language selections (From and To Fields are provided). I could then choose to simply translate the text, which immediately appeared at the bottom of my screen or send the translation as an email or an SMS (text message). Here's a screenshot from the main screen:
The email option when chosen allows the user to enter in the receipients email and shows the translated text. It also auto fills the subject with the words: Translated Text from ProTranslateLite which I actually found helpful since the person on the receiving end may wonder why my grammar wasn't perfect.
The program supports most of the major languages including English, Dutch, Italian, French, Spanish, Russian, German and many others and the languages can be swapped at any point for various translations.
As I mentioned briefly at the start of this article the program is based off the Google Translate API's which means the information is pulled in real time from Google. I use an unlimited data plan when testing applications and given that you are sending and receiving requests to Google's servers I would probably suggest using this application with an unlimited data plan. With that being said text data tends to be on the "lighter" side of data usage so you may want to monitor your memory usage in terms of data streaming before using this program on a regular basis.
ProTranslateLite is a very light weight application, it simply pulls Google Translate API information and offers those translations for email and SMS purposes. Thankfully while the application doesn't have the nicest interface it does an excellent job of quickly providing translations and allows for quick swiching between languages. If you simply need to send messages in various languages on the fly I would definitely recommend downloading and using this simple yet useful Blackberry App.
