The 8220 is a quad-band GSM device which means it can connect to carriers throughout the world if purchase in an unlocked state or if you obtain the devices unlock code from the carrier or via online resources. The device however lacks 3G data connectivity which means it's most suited for lower level internet browsing and data downloads. With that being said we found it easy to connect to Edge connections in our area and the include rudimentary browser opened quickly and allowed for semi-decent browsing.
The device also includes a WiFi connection which was much more suitable internet browsing. We were able to connect to secure networks with our included password and unsecure networks easily. The WiFi option appeared over several hours to hold a good connection with no issues that we noticed.
The device also features Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP which allowed for decent audio playback over various A2DP enabled headsets. And of course the MicroSDHC card and data sync USB capabilities add to the devices connectivity options.
Finally, in terms of Email the flip offers BES access and push email in the same terms found on larger Blackberry devices. Thanks to SureType technology clicking out email messages is also a breeze. Essentially we found the email to be on par with other push email offerings and text messaging was just as simple to use.
Overall the connectivity features are ample if not stellar. For a mid-level device we were happy, but higher end features would have been appreciated.
The Blackberry Flip 8220 offers a 900mAh battery that claims 4 hours of talk time and 14 standby days. Although our own testing pointed to 6 hours of talk time and after one day of no calling our battery showed no signed of draining. Overall the battery is suitable for calling. However when Bluetooth was being used or WiFi was connected the battery drained much more quickly.
For power users a second battery is suggested, while light weight users should find the battery power to be ample.
The Blackberry Flip 8220 is a great mid-level device that offers ample connectivity, if not stellar internet. It also features a decent camera and two vibrant displays. If you need email connectivity but you don't want to carry around a bulky Blackberry device the Blackberry Flip is a great and stylish option for even the heaviest email users.
