BlackBerry devices are smartphones and as such, they are constantly being used on the go for both corporate and personal purposes. The internet plays a vital role in the use of many BlackBerry applications and I have been searching for an internet speed test app for BlackBerry for a long time.
Internet Speed Test App for BlackBerry
There are not many internet speed test apps for BlackBerry smartphones, as a matter of fact, I have only found one good internet speed test app for BlackBerry so far and it is the Cisco Gist (Global Internet Speed Test).
Cisco Gist Speed Test App for BlackBerry
The Cisco Gist App gives you the opportunity to test or measure your connection speed with your network provider. This is determined by the connection speed obtained based on where you are located and the speed of access to the network at the time that the test is conducted.
One test is not a certain determination of your BlackBerry internet speed for all times, because a test done in one location at a certain time of the day, may produce different results from another test done in another location at a different time of day. In addition, you can use this speed test app for BlackBerry to make a comparison of cellular speeds with fellow BlackBerry users globally.
How Does the Speed Test App for BlackBerry Work?
When the app is performing a speed test it downloads data from a server and uses the information gathered for its measurement. To be more specific, the app will download a set data size from one of its server that is nearest to the location that you are at when you perform the test. Then it will determine your speed based on the time that it took to download that known quantity of data. You must be wondering about how far the servers are from your location and how they affect your results; well if you are, you will be glad to know that Cisco Gist is currently hosted on the Akamai Edge Platform, which means that it is on a network with more than 48,000 servers around the world. Therefore, you are able to get a more accurate result from your speed test, no matter where in the world you are.
The user interface is pretty simple to operate and is as equally simple to read. Once you open the app, you will notice the “Run Test" button, which you will select. Then you wait for it to provide you with a result. The results will include the number of kilobytes per second for your speed as well at the number of seconds that it took for you to download the data. It will even provide you with a rating for your current speed.
As you continue to do your tests in different locations, the app will provide you with your average speed, your highest speed and your lowest speed; you will also be able to see this same information for world tests.
Maybe in the future another company will develop their own internet Speed Test App for Blackberry, but until then, Cisco Gist is doing a very good job at providing that much needed service. The best thing about the Cisco Gist app is that it is completely free and can be downloaded from Blackberry App World.
