Firmware update 4.7.0.78 was recently released for the Blackberry Storm. You can choose to update your Blackberry over the air or download the update from your service provider web page. The next section will address some of the important changes for the Blackberry storm in this firmware update.
To install the update on your Blackberry Storm you can check for an OTA (Over the Air) update. You can navigate to your network operators website and download the update to your PC. To install the update via the PC make sure you have the following ready -
- A PC running RIM's Blackberry desktop manager software. You could alternatively use a Mac if you can get VIsta or XP to run on it using a boot loader. You can also download the Blackberry desktop manager software from the RIM web page for your Blackberry Storm if you don't already have it installed.
- Your Blackberry Storm
- The USB data transfer cable.
After you download the update which is 103 MB and the Blackberry Desktop Manager Software which is about 81 MB. All you need to do is click the update file and allow the installer to update your phone. It takes about twenty minutes to complete. You should backup any important information before proceeding. You will lose all third party applications after updating so be prepared to re-install all your previously existing applications. Blackberry messaging and your contacts are unaffected. But you should backup anyway just to be on the safe side.
Some of the improvements in this update are better on screen keyboard abilities. It now keeps up with your typing pace if you type very fast. In the options screen, you will see a new option called Wireless Upgrade. It allows you to check for OTA updates whenever you want and download them at your own convenience. The behaviour of the accelerometer has improved along with the touch screen interface.
To check the version of the firmware on your Blackberry Storm, just navigate to the options menu and select About. The third line will display the currently installed firmware on your Storm.
