This feature is one among the many fixes present in the latest update, v1.1 of Blackberry App World.
Whenever an application on the Blackberry App World recieves an update, you will be instantly notified of it via a Blackberry Message and an indication on your home screen. You can also view the updated version of the application on Blackberry App World.
There are four methods by which you are notified of new updates to your applications via Blackberry App World -
1 - A Home screen notification - A small icon appears on your home screen, informing you of an update.
2 - Blackberry Message - You will recieve a new message if any applications are updated.
3 - Your Blackberry App World Icon will indicate a new update.
4 - Within the Blackberry App World application - The icon of a specific application within app world will indicate a new update.
While you may want to download applications from OTA links directly on the developers web page, downloading it from the Blackberry App World application is now a better proposition. You are guaranteed to get the latest version of the application and it is also authorized for use by RIM. There are of course many applications in their beta stages which you can not obtain from the Blackberry App World application and also numerous other apps that are not directly supported by RIM. For these files, your only option is to ferret them out from the developers web page or downloading it directly from popular Blackberry web sites.
