Read on to find out my impressions while using ShortcutMe, an application launcher and shortcut manager for your Blackberry Smartphone.

Introduction

In this part of the review, I will show you how Shortcut me can be used to streamline your Blackberry experience and how you can map your tasks and applications to shortcuts. We will also be looking at the settings and configuration section of the application.

Usage

UsageShortcutMe works from within any application. To use a shortcut, you just press the convenience key and start typing in a shortcut. Just as soon as you finish typing, the mapped application or task will be executed. If you can't remember a shortcut, pressing the convenience key and the space key will display the list of all shortcuts. You can browse through the shortcuts using the trackball or space key and select the application of your choice. I would have appreciated having the various shortcuts grouped by category for easy editing.

The possibilities of mapping the convenience keys to applications are endless as you can map multiple clicks of the convenience keys to applications.

Settings

SettingsThe applications has two menus for configuring the settings. You can edit the font size on the main and config pages. You can control the duration of the phone's vibration on selecting a shortcut. Setting it to zero turns it off. Multiple keyboard configurations such as QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ are supported. The application supports touch based navigation on the Blackberry Storm where you can use your finger for scrolling. The application has a built in check for conflicting shortcuts and you can choose to hide disabled shortcuts. Shortcuts with a space after them are considered invalid.

You have the option of saving the settings in a text file on your Blackberry, in case you want to migrate the settings to another phone. It's a thoughtful feature that would save anyone a lot of time in setting up the app on a new phone.

Conclusion

Overall ShortcutMe is a well rounded applications with a simple and effective interface. The possibility of mapping tasks is limitless and works without any problems. Configuring and using shortcuts is made easy with the user interface. There is a slight intitial learning curve involved in learning how to map important tasks and applications, but once you get used to it, the application is a time saver.

The application can be purchased from the Blackberry App Store or the developers web page. It is priced at 4.99 USD.
