If you don't want to purchase ringtones, or you want to use a different part of the song than a ringtone your provider uses, you can do this for free, provided you legally own the MP3 file you will be using to create the ringtone. It is important to note though, most items purchased through iTunes have digital rights management, or DRM encoded on them to prevent them from being used to create ringtones. Rip a CD to your computer or use another vendor, such as Amazon to ensure you can use your MP3 files.
For this tutorial, you will need:
- Your BlackBerry
- the USB cable for your BlackBerry.
- the BlackBerry RIM Desktop Manager Program.
- Media of your choosing.
Connect your BlackBerry to your computer and open the Desktop Manager program. If the Desktop Manager program is not currently installed on your system, download it from the BlackBerry website or use the discs that came wth your phone. Install the program according to the instructions provided with the file download--it's easy.
Open the Roxio Media Manager program from within your Desktop Manager. Once this program is open, you'll be able to locate the media file you want to use to create the ringtone. If the file you want to use is on a CD, you'll need to make sure the CD is in your computer, then choose the "Import Digital Media" button on the top left of the screen. This will allow you to import the songs you want to use to the program.
If the file you want to use is already on your comptuer, select the "Folders" button at the top left of the screen. From here you'll want to navigate through your files and folders until you reach the location where the file is.
Once you have selected the file you want to use to create the custom ringtone, go to File > Edit > Edit with Quick Sound Editor. Preview the file to make sure it's the one you want, using the "Preview" button in the center of the screen. Now you'll be able to choose the ringtone start and end points. The sound editor has functions to help improve the sound quality of the ringtone. You can choose to fade in or fade out the ringtone if you wish.
Once you are satisifed with your placements of the start and end points, preview the ringtone again. Now, save the file with another name so you don't lose the entire song and you know it's the ringtone you created. Click the "Create Ringtone" button so you can save the file to your computer to install on your BlackBerry later or save it to your media card in the BlackBerry.
