Dealing with Google Apps in the BlackBerry

Google Apps offer great tools to improve productivity. But they don't always cooperate when you download or install them. Discover the different ways you can try to work around this.

I've had loads of problems with Google Sync and other Google apps for the BlackBerry. When Google Updater announced the availability of an app update, I'd tell it to update and change all the permissions to "Allow." The BlackBerry downloaded the app update, but then it'd stick its tongue at me and claim it couldn't update.

So I uninstalled all of the Google apps thinking it could use a fresh install. I tried to do it from Google Mobile App, which I downloaded from m.google.com. See the screen shot at the end of the article. It had icons for Gmail, Google Maps, Google News and Google Reader. I wanted Gmail back on my BlackBerry, so I selected the Gmail icon. Downloaded and failed.

I tried it for all the apps and gave up. Then, I went to the BlackBerry browser and navigated my way to m.google.com. This page listed all the Google products available for the BlackBerry. I downloaded the apps one-by-one. It worked.

While writing this article, I noticed I forgot to download and install Google Maps. I went to Google Mobile App, clicked the maps icon and let it download thinking it wouldn't work. It worked.

So be aware that Google apps can make trouble on the BlackBerry, but they DO work. You have two ways to downloading and installing them on your BlackBerry. Try both before throwing your hands up in the air:

Select the application to download and hope for the best. See Sync Google Calendar and Gmail Contacts with your Blackberry to learn how to take advantage of this app. How to Install Gmail Client on BlackBerry has more details, if you'd like to dive deeper.

All of this sounds confusing. For the most part, you can access Google stuff for mobile in two ways -- through the BlackBerry's browser and by downloading and installing Google Mobile App.

Oh, Google's search app now comes with voice-based search. You can use your voice to enter search keywords without typing them in. Its voice recognition isn't so accurate especially if you're in noisy situations. But it's there if you want to give it a shot.

Once Google Apps works on your BlackBerry, it makes you more productive. Entering dates and contacts into the BlackBerry requires more work than previous devices. Google Sync takes away that pain.

If nothing works for you, then try this. Go to Gmail, click Help and enter "Google BlackBerry" into the search box to find answers. It can help to add your BlackBerry type (Curve, Bold, etc.) in the search to narrow it down if the initial search doesn't yield a solution.
