A Preview of Main Features of Blackberry Gemini 9300

RIM has always been criticized for not bringing out new innovations quickly enough and for sticking to a low two or three phone launches per year. But this coming year we'll see the uprising of lots of new Blackberry devices such as the Magnum 9220, Gemini 8325, Pearl Flip 8230 and Pluto 9900. A lot of people will agree with me that the Blackberry Curve 8900 is one of the most successful mobile phones from RIM. It has a slim, sleek and ultra-light design, great battery back-up and it covers almost all the features that a good business phone must have. One area where we felt that it lost its touch however was the absence of 3G compatibility. To fill up this gap, RIM is now planning to introduce a new phone via the Gemini series which will most probably be called the Gemini 9300. Most of the information available about this phone is based on rumors and speculations by various websites, but one thing is certain, it will be a 3G compatible phone capable of global roaming and will have quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS support.

I could not find any images of Gemini 9300 at the time of this post, but speculations are that it will inherit the same sleek deign that we have witnessed via the Blackberry Curve 8900. Just like its predecessor it will also have a 2.4 inch (or even bigger) TFT screen at a high resolution along, with a QWERTY keyboard thrown in for good measure. At this stage, there is still doubt whether the screen will have a multi-touch interface or not. Hopefully we will also see a new avatar of our favorite trackball with a different color, maybe black? To boost up the performance and enable multi-tasking the device will be powered by a faster processor (might be above 700 MHz) and will come with loads of system memory to back it up. It is supposed to be rich in connectivity just like its predecessor and will come with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD card slot and a micro (or maybe mini) USB port. There is no news, not even rumors at this point whether this device is going to have a GPS receiver or not, however there is a good possibility that this phone will come with an in-built GPS receiver and will also incorporate GPS assisted software like GPS maps and voice guided instructions. Like all other Blackberry phones it will have a decent messaging platform with a user-friendly phone organizer and a document reader to read documents like PDF, MS Word and Excel.

The 3.2 mega-pixel camera that we have seen on the Blackberry Curve 8900 can be included in the Gemini 9300 specs as well, but there is a likely possibility that we might witness a better, more high-end camera that might include features like auto-focus, image stabilization, digital zoom, smile detection, face detection and macro-mode. Most likely it will have the same removable Lithium-Ion battery that we have seen on many other Blackberry mobile phones, but since it's a 3G mobile phone which will need more power, RIM might include a better battery option with more mAh capacity.

The Blackberry Gemini 9300 might see the markets by the last quarter of 2009, but no official announcements have been made by the company. So...2010 might be a bettery possibility, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.
