If you're a novice to the Blackberry world, a new user who just picked up the new touchscreen Storm, or even a veteran user looking to get the most from their Smartphone, this article is a great place to start. Inside you will find my top picks for FREE Blackberry apps to use with the v4.2+ OS.
App Store - Blackberry App World: The Blackberry finally now has a equivilent to what the iPhone has. This store allows you to browse and download virtually all of the popular applications that currently exists for the Blackberry. Also, this app also manages your download history, which makes it easy if you need to reinstall programs that were previously removed, or even upgrade them. Managing your existing applications is a breeze, the download page for each app will display the current version number and what is currently installed. If an upgrade is available, the download button changes to a upgrade button. If you have the current version installed, then the download button disappears. It even allows you to recommend apps to your friends. Purchasing is handled through PayPal intergration.
Social Networking Clients - Facebook for BlackBerry: Allows you to upload photos & tag friends in them; change, view and reply to statuses; send & receive messages; and poke friends. It provides links to allow you to view profiles through your web browser. At this time, it does not support third-party applications like FunWall or SuperPoke. It will stay on in the background to allow you receive alerts and updates without having to be on the website. The new version available (v1.6) even allows you to intergrate the app into your address book and calendar on your phone. Once you link your friends to your phone's contact list, it will automatically update their caller ID picture to their profile picture everytime its changed. If your friends happen to invite you to an event, that gets added to your calendar.
- MySpace for BlackBerry: A recently released product that functions a lot like Facebook mobile, including not supporting third party applications at this time.
- TwitterBerry: A lightweight application that allows you to post updates to your Twitter account and view updates from your friends. It even supports photo uploading and will even work with the Blackberry Storm.
- ShoZu: Allow you to upload content to your social networking sites, such as: Flickr, Facebook, Blogger, Picasa, Photobucket, Snapfish, YouTube, and many more! The client app is managed through the ShoZu website, which requires free registration.
Instant Messaging Clients - Blackberry Messenger: If you have a newer Blackberry, it comes with your OS by default. This application allows you to communicate with your friends (who have BB phones as well) using the Blackberry servers (which is fairly secure).
- Google Talk (Beta)
- Yahoo! Instant Messenger
- AIM
- Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger)
- ICQ
- Palringo (Beta): A multi-IM client, like Meebo & Pidgin, that seems promising after all of the many beta bugs are "ironed out".
Photo Sharing Sites -
- Picasa Web Albums (Google): Allows you to upload, browse and share photos with other Picasa users. You can also view can comment on friend’s photos, and create slideshows. A nice product to have if you have a Pearl (or a newer model with a camera built-in) and you want to free up some space on your phone (Now rolled into the new Google Mobile app).
- Flickr Photo Uploader: Has many of the same features that Picasa offers, including GeoTagging, which uses your phone's GPS capabilities to tell where the pictures were taken.
